Governor signs 32 bills passed by Nevada Legislature ahead of Memorial Day weekend
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed 32 bills into law Friday, including a measure that speeds up the employee background check process for some private businesses, a consumer protection bill ensuring full rate disclosure at rental truck establishments, and an act that gives additional criteria for water right holders to justify time extensions.
Assembly Bill 26 is an executive agency bill that will streamline processes in order to reduce wait times associated with criminal background checks.
In response to concerns from local employers, who identified delayed processing of criminal background checks on potential employees, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) introduced this legislation to expand the ability for employer background check companies to access the DPS Central Criminal Repository.
Assembly Bill 233 is a consumer protection bill that was sponsored by Assemblyman Paul Anderson.
AB 233 requires that additional fees charged as a condition of doing business be disclosed at the time a rate quote is provided. Most of the Nevada truck rental industry separately state additional charges to the base rental rate plus mileage rate as a condition of rental. This bill ensures that truck renters will know the full cost of the rental at the time of quote.
Assembly Bill 209 was sponsored by Assemblyman James Oscarson and is a result of discussions during the Governor’s Drought Forum about the challenges that arise from the requirement to beneficially use a water right or potentially lose it to forfeiture for non-use, commonly referred to as “use it or lose it.”
This bill adds additional criteria the State Engineer must consider to determine whether an extension of time request from the water right holder is necessary.
The other 29 measures signed by Sandoval Friday include 20 additional Assembly Bills: 231, 173, 232, 392, 169, 455, 146, 317, 334, 335, 117, 214, 245, 425, 34, 114, 70, 176, 202, and 465.
Nine bills signed by Sandoval Friday originated out of the state senate: 133, 2, 91, 50, 123, 51, 75, 247, 252.
