It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. UPDATE: Carson City District Attorney-Elect Jason Woodbury announced Wednesday he will appoint Kristin Luis to be Assistant District Attorney. She will replace Mark Krueger who is now serving as assistant district attorney under Neil Rombardo.

“Kristin embodies every principle I want the D.A.’s office to reflect,” said Woodbury. “She’s honest. Her judgment is sensible and consistent. And she’s the hardest working person I’ve ever known.”

Robert "Robbie" Hernandez, 28, and Jordan Burkhart, 24, were each sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court to six years to 15 years each for robbery against a person over the age of 60, and an additional six years to 20 years for perpetrating the crimes on a person older than 60 years of age.

James Sorrentino, the 101-year-old veteran who was the victim of a home invasion in Carson City over Memorial Day weekend has died. Sorrentino's family told News 4 that the veteran passed away on Friday.

One of two involved in the robbery of a 101-year-old Carson City World War II veteran will go before a jury while the other will be sentenced for the crime late next month.

It has been a good week for 101-year-old veteran James Sorrentino of Carson City. It is a far cry from his Memorial Day weekend this year, when he and his caretaker were robbed at gunpoint in his home.

Earlier this week, the robbers were arraigned in court. Both pleaded guilty and face up to 35 years in prison.

UPDATE: An arraignment hearing for Jordan Burkhart and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, accused of robbing an elderly man and a caretaker at gunpoint over Memorial Day weekend, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, 9 a.m.

Two men who allegedly broke into the home of an elderly World War II veteran and held his caregiver at gunpoint over Memorial Day weekend will be in a Carson City courtroom Monday.

Two men are in custody Wednesday night following Sunday's armed robbery of an elderly man and caretaker inside a Canvasback Drive home, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Detectives with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested Jordan Burkhart, 24, of Wellington and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, 27, of Carson CIty. Burkhart was arrested at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office without incident on a probation violation, said Furlong. Following the arrest, the search continued for Hernandez and ended in the Reno/Sparks area. Bail was set at $250,000 each.

CARSON CITY — Step into the frame of an authentic TV western aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The 2014 season took to the rails Memorial Day weekend. Steam train rides from Nevada’s capital, Carson City, to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City began Saturday and continue weekends through Oct. 19. Friday diesel train tours start June 20.

UPDATE: Carson City sheriff's office deputies made multiple felony and misdemeanor arrests from Friday through Monday during the Memorial Day weekend holiday period. Felony arrests were for domestic battery, weapon and drug charges.

Invasive aquatic species watercraft inspection and decontamination stations have opened at Lahontan Reservoir and other waterways in time for Memorial Day weekend, according to the Nevada Division of State Parks.

The last of the Lake Tahoe area inspection stations, on State Route 267 at Northstar Drive south of Truckee in California, opened Thursday.

Memorial Day weekend is nearly here, the weather is forecast to be gorgeous and for countless folks in this general area, it will be their first big outdoor adventure of 2014.

Seeliger Elementary and the Brewery Arts Center have partnered to bring "Dancing Drum," an interactive performance on Friday that combines high energy drumming with abundant opportunities for audience participation.

Students from Seeliger Elementary School will join New Orleans-based Dancing Drum's Steve Campbell during a section of the performance.

Be prepared for lots of great music, outstanding musicianship and a fun way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend. Tickets are $5. The show begins 7:00pm in the BAC Performance Hall, 511 W King Street in Carson City.

It is full steam ahead aboard Nevada's premiere window seat into the Wild West with the 2014 season of the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad taking to the rails beginning Memorial Day weekend.

Steam train rides from Carson City to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City will begin May 24 and extend weekends through Oct. 19. Friday diesel train tours will begin June 20.
 

Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in historic Virginia City with the annual Celebration of Heroes Parade Saturday, May 24 at noon. Taking place down C Street, the parade honors the memory of those who gave their lives for this country.

Here is the Carson City area road report provided by the public works department for the week of April 28 through May 4, 2014. Beginning Monday, a project to provide utility and street improvements will begin on Vista Grande Boulevard.

The street will be closed between Topsy Lane and Old Clear Creek Road to vehicles until project completion estimated to be in June. Motorist will need to use other routes.

Road construction projects around Carson City and Lake Tahoe are underway. Carson City Public Works reports the following projects for the week: There will be lane closures and traffic control on Fairview Drive at the intersection with Carson Street from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22.

Some recreational areas around Lake Tahoe will be opened early for the 2014 season, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday. Inspiration Point, Logan Shoals, Chimney Beach, and Secret Harbor open April 21 and Sawmill Pond and the Sandpit OHV areas open May 1. Baldwin Beach and Nevada Beach and Campground open May 9.
