Governor Sandoval announces appointments, Carson City staff change
Submitted by editor on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 3:09pmNevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced Tuesday the appointments of General Counsel Joe Reynolds to serve as chairman of the Public Utilities Commission and Leo Drozdoff as acting-Commissioner effective Oct. 3.
Reynolds and Drozdoff will fill the vacancies of Commissioners David Noble and Alaina Burtenshaw, respectively.

Dayton, Nv. The Desert Born Art Project opened on Monday, August 29 at the Dayton Valley Branch Library. Pamela Nesbit and Donna Nelson of Smith Valley, Nv. are two local area artists that have collaborated to create very unique art by combining old objects found on the desert and repurposing the objects into art. Their work will be on display through the month of September and the first couple weeks of October of this year. The exhibit is free at the Dayton Valley Branch Library.
Walmart helps sustain food pantries and job programs in rural Nevada communities

Each summer, pantry volunteers, staff and participants host a lunchtime tour with key Walmart representatives to show their appreciation.
EPA proposes to add Nevada's Anaconda mine site in Lyon County to National Priorities List

The announcement is the first step in a process to make the site eligible to receive federal funding for a long-term, permanent cleanup.

Julia has been a member of Arrowhead 4-H Livestock Club for the last six years. She has raised and cared for many animals during her time with the club. The generous support of local business and her grandparents, Julian and Joanna Smith, has allowed her to flourish. Julia recently graduated Carson High School and is now attending the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Brush fire knocked down, fire marshal investigates

The fire, which started before 2 p.m., burned between 1.5 to 2 acres in the Grosh Avenue area. One structure, a mobile home, burned and one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Ryan Coddington was convicted in the death of Alea Clark, 32, who was reported missing on Jan. 9, 2015. Her remains were found at Lahontan State Recreation Area Feb. 3, 2015.

Locally, the debris was seen as far west as Lake Tahoe and into the Mound House, Dayton and Brunswick Canyon areas.

Fire agencies called to large structure fire in Dayton
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 07/27/2016 - 11:39amUPDATE 5:17PM: Central Lyon County Fire District reports that both homes in Wednesday's fire in Dayton have been destroyed. Units from surrounding fire agencies remain on scene doing mop up operations.
Central Lyon County Fire confirms two bystanders were transported to a local hospital for possible smoke related injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting one family of three and a local church is assisting the other family of three to four people. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Nevada State Fire Marshals Office.
Check of 186 sex offenders in Lyon County and Fallon results in one arrest, 26 not in compliance
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/26/2016 - 10:59amA recent check of 186 sex offenders in Lyon County and Fallon resulted in one arrest and 26 people found to not be in compliance with registration requirements, the Nevada Department of Public Safety and Parole and Probation announced Tuesday.
The multi-agency collaborative effort, called "Operation Vigilance" was done to verify sex offender registration compliance and was conducted in Dayton, Silver Springs, Yerington, Fernley, Stagecoach and Fallon.
Carson City Salvation Army launches annual backpack and school supply drive

Children from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County will receive backpacks and school supplies as needed. The Salvation Army will have a distribution of the back packs and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the School Districts for distribution to children in transition.
