'Volunteers in Policing' Make Dayton Food Drive Big Success
Dayton, Nevada – Alie Trier, Dayton Food Pantry director, was delighted with the results of a recent “Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton. She exclaimed “Everyone was awesome!”
Volunteers in Policing, Lyon County Sheriff's Department, Smith's Grocery Store, donors, and community volunteers contributed to the event that resulted in the collection of $480 in cash plus over $700 worth of food items for the Dayton Food Pantry in just 4 hours on July 9th, 2016 at Smith's Grocery.
What Does the Pantry Do? Residents of the Dayton area work with the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey in volunteer service to keep the pantry going strong.Volunteers range from the very young to elders, and come from all walks of life, united by the belief that no one should go hungry.
From the Pantry site on the corner of Highway 50 at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton, emergency food boxes are provided during weekday hours (Mon-Thurs from 10am-4pm), and monthly food boxes are provided for the Dayton Senior Center Homebound list. Food is packed and delivered each Friday for local students through a school “Backpack Program”, providing nearly 200 students K-12 with much-needed food during the weekends. The Pantry offers its primary food distribution on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 1pm-3pm at Sutro Elementary school.
The nonprofit Community Chest, Inc also offers employment assistance onsite at the Pantry with a staff person who can help clients locate job openings, develop resumes, and connect with job training opportunities, in addition to assisting with Medicaid, Disability and SNAP (food stamps).
Through grants, USDA, and the generous donations of businesses and private citizens in the region, the Pantry is able to help locals of all ages avoid hunger. The Pantry also collects food through Food Bank of Northern Nevada and benefits from reduced price rates from many area businesses.
