WNC hospitality workshop keys on enhancing guest services

Western Nevada College will offer a hospitality skills workshop on Saturday, Feb. 8, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Carson City. Participants can learn guest service skills in the Guest Service Gold Workshop, to become a more valuable employee in today’s competitive job market.

Completion of the three-hour workshop can lead to a Certified Guest Service Professional designation. For employees in the hospitality industry, CGSP is recognized worldwide and is the highest designation of award-winning guest service.

Cooperative Extension ‘Great Ideas From Growers’ peer-mentoring begins

RENO, Nev. – Beginning Jan. 13, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will offer five “Great Ideas From Growers” sessions, where small farm producers from across the state can share their knowledge and experiences to help each other improve their businesses.

Nevada Department of Agriculture to promote state’s food, farming businesses

The Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Thursday its newly created Buy Nevada brand program to promote Nevada food and agriculture.

“Buy Nevada has been in planning for more than a year,” said Jim Barbee, director of the Nevada Department of Agriculture. “We have been actively seeking to have a program that promotes the state’s food and agriculture industry as a whole because of the Department’s statutory mandate to advance Nevada agriculture.”

UNR poised to support Nevada as national drone development center

RENO, Nev. – The FAA has selected the State of Nevada as one of six states designated as a center for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles and outdoor testing of unmanned autonomous systems, Nevada Gov.

Nevada picked among six drone development centers

Nevada has been picked as one of six locations to be a center for drone development in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday.

As a drone development site, the state would benefit by providing thousands of jobs with an average wage of approximately $62,000; an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact in present dollars; and an estimated $125 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

Ametherm opens new manufacturing facility, doubles size of components plant

Carson City-based Ametherm, a manufacturer of thermistors and other electronic components for circuit protection, announced Thursday that it has doubled the size of its manufacturing plant with a newly purchased 36,000-square-foot facility on Carson City's east side.

In an industry where Asia-sourced components dominate, Ametherm manufactures all its products in the U.S.A., at its new facility and at a smaller Carson City plant that was its headquarters from 1994 until recently.

Nevada Division of Insurance: Canceled insurance policies won't be extended

The Nevada Division of Insurance announced Wednesday that it would not extend canceled health care policies because doing so would conflict with both state law and federal laws.

Carson City's October jobless rate increases to 9.6 percent

While state jobless figures went down for the month, the October unemployment figures in Carson City increased to 9.6 percent, up from from September’s 9.4 percent.

"Carson City's economy still struggles and has lost 700 jobs or -2.5 percent relative to one year ago," according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Labor overview.

Builder's Association of Western Nevada give helping hand to homeowners with repair needs

All hands were on board Saturday as the Women's Council of the Builder's Association of Western Nevada answered the call to help two Carson City homeowners in need of upgrades and repairs.

Ramsey Circle homeowner Nora McGinley fought back tears as a team of local contractors with power tools and building materials arrived at her doorstep with one mission in mind: Lending a helping hand to a good neighbor.

"I'm so grateful. It's just wonderful to know there are people in our community who go out of their way on a Saturday to do something like this," said McGinley. "It's more than I ever imagined."

Nevada looks at 'drones' for economic development and natural resource efforts

Unmanned Aerial Systems, also known as drones, may be relatively small, but could have a big impact on Nevada’s economy and natural resources, especially when the necessary pieces and experts come together to do the work and research.

Carson City Harvest Club to receive grant to produce locally grown food for local families

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

Sen. Reid: WNC and two other college grants designed to provide innovative training

With news this week that Western Nevada College is the recipient of a $1.5 million grant, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, announced two other grants for area colleges, Truckee Meadows Community College and Great Basin College.

The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which was authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus bill. WNC's portion of the grant is $1,567,530. TMCC received a grant of $ 3,201,968 and Great Basin College, $4,009,331.
