Carson City's unemployment fell to 7.1 percent in September, down from August’s 7.5 percent and 2.4 percent over the stretch of a year, according to figures released Friday from the Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Statewide the unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 7.3 percent in September, the lowest it has been since July 2008.

Energy sipping LED lights, along with an abundance of skylights and motion sensors that automatically switch off the lights when they aren't needed — referred to in the energy industry as "daylight harvesting" — are expected to reduce annual energy costs by about $110,700 at one of the newest warehouses in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Sparks.

The Reno-area real estate market continues to rebound in the third quarter, with a 9 percent rise in sales volume and 14 percent jump in median home price, according to a Lake Tahoe-based real estate firm.

Home prices in Carson Valley were up, with a 10 percent jump in median price ($275,500) and six percent rise in average price ($315,115). Sales volume, however, was down three percent and units sold was down eight percent.

The inaugural Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture will be Nov. 13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.

The Carson City Greenhouse Project at Carson High School is one of 14 projects in Nevada to receive specialty crop block grant money designed for organizations that promote and enhance speciality crops through education, research, marketing and production, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

The $21,577 in grant money earmarked for the Greenhouse Project will help fund the Growing America’s Future Farmer program, said JoAnne Skelly, extension educator with the University of Nevada and grant writer for the Greenhouse Project.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s fledgling drone testing industry received a $1.25 million boost in state funding from a legislative panel on Wednesday.
The Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee approved allocating $1.25 million from a $4 million fund set aside in the 2013 session to help the state develop the testing of the aerial technology.

An ancient forest of mature pine trees, standing upright under 100 feet of water in a small lake in the Lake Tahoe Basin, helps scientists as they study how changing climate can affect mountain environments and the communities in them. The trees, discovered and studied by a University of Nevada, Reno, researcher, are remnants of a 200-year-long medieval drought.

The site is a stop on one of the field trips of a four-day international conference on mountain observatories held at the University of Nevada, Reno July 16-19.

Unemployment figures for Carson City continue to improve, dropping to 7.9 percent for the year after slight improvements in June. Statewide, Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 7.7 percent in June, the lowest it has been in nearly six years.

Over the year, unemployment in the Reno/Sparks metro area is down 2.8 points, and Carson City is down 2.5 points, according to figures released Friday from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Reno/Sparks and Carson City each fell by 0.1 percentage points to 7.2 and 7.9 percent, respectively.

Home sales throughout Lake Tahoe continued to slow throughout the first half of the year, while home prices remained steady, according to a quarterly report released by Lake Tahoe-based real estate company Chase International. Despite an 18 percent decline in overall sales volume, the figures are still significantly higher than those of 2012.

The Carson City Chamber was incorporated in 1945 and has just recently installed the 65th Chairman of the Board. Terrie McNutt, General Manager of the Silver Oak Executive Conference Center and Silver Oak Golf, was installed as chairman at the Chamber Annual Meeting, June 27.
