Builder's Association of Western Nevada give helping hand to homeowners with repair needs
All hands were on board Saturday as the Women's Council of the Builder's Association of Western Nevada answered the call to help two Carson City homeowners in need of upgrades and repairs.
Ramsey Circle homeowner Nora McGinley fought back tears as a team of local contractors with power tools and building materials arrived at her doorstep with one mission in mind: Lending a helping hand to a good neighbor.
"I'm so grateful. It's just wonderful to know there are people in our community who go out of their way on a Saturday to do something like this," said McGinley. "It's more than I ever imagined."
For eight years the Builders Association of Western Nevada, which serves Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County, has carried out its Helping Hands program by giving women, the disabled and senior citizens help with upgrades and repairs to the homes they own, said Sheena Shrum, BAWN's executive officer.
In September BAWN put out the call for applicants. McGinley, a former parole and probation worker who retired early because of a brain swelling disability, said she saw the application on Carson Now and thought she would apply because she was in need of some repairs and upgrades.
"I went ahead and applied and when I got the call back saying they would do this for me, I began to cry just like I am now," she said.
Shrum said McGinley was selected based on her immediate home needs and because of her ongoing contributions to the Carson City community. McGinley is an advocate for those with brain injuries through the Head Injury Association of Northern Nevada.
"Nora gives back to the community. She's a very deserving woman and she was in great need," said Shrum.
Some of the home improvement features under the program include: Light painting, caulking, replacing hardware, replace purchased light fixtures, replace purchased ceiling fans, replace purchased faucets and bathroom fixtures, light fence repairs, light yard work, weatherization, minor repairs to shelves and/or cabinets, light irrigation repair, repair or replace purchased lock assembly sets.
McGinley's home received a bathroom paint job with new vents, a new kitchen faucet, tile replacement, and new light fixtures. Later Saturday the Helping Hands team went to a Saliman Road home to help with, among other things, fence maintenance, repairs and new kitchen florescent lights. Between the two projects, there was at least eight hours of donated work involved amounting to conservatively $2,500 in labor costs and around $500 in donated materials and supplies.
Those BAWN member builders and contractors helping out with Saturday's projects were:
— Genna Tonneslan, Account Manager at Quick Space
— Terry Roberts of Foothill Electric
— Rob McQueary of ARMAC Construction of Carson City and president of BAWN
— Ron Kipp, ARMAC Construction
— Michele Creasey with Pro Group Management
— Kristen Marshall with Incline Builders
