Western Nevada College students to benefit from $1.5 million grant

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College students will have more opportunities to prepare for skilled technical jobs in the coming years, following Wednesday's announcement of a $1,567,530 grant workforce training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It is part of $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of innovative training programs.

State investigates shooting of two horses east of Carson City

The deaths of two horses east of Carson City near Mound House is being investigated by the state of Nevada.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture reports one horse, which appeared to have been shot, was found dead Monday near Mound House in Lyon County.

Another horse, which appeared to have been shot with arrows and was near death, was found near the same area. The second horse was euthanized by a state agricultural enforcement officer.

WNC receives $5,000 grant to assist hospitality program

A worldwide industry leader known for welcoming and accommodating guests has awarded Western Nevada College and its Carson City business partners a grant to offer hospitality certification workshops.

Hilton Worldwide has allocated a $5,000 Travel and Purpose Action Grant to WNC and key local partners - the Hampton Inn & Suites Carson City, and the Carson Valley Inn, Carson City Chamber of Commerce, and Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. The grant will help fund a public workshop for American Hotel and Lodging Association certification on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Hampton Inn.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority wins national award

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority team was presented with the 2013 Pioneer in Housing Award (Large Agency) from Nan McKay & Associates at the 2013 NMA Housing Conference, held in San Diego earlier this month.

According to NMA the judges were greatly impressed by the Nevada Rural Housing Authority’s home financing program to expand homeownership opportunities in the rural parts of the state.

Attention single female homeowners: Women's council offers home improvement help

The Builders Association of Western Nevada Women’s Council, which serves Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County, will continue its Helping Hands program this year by giving single female homeowners or senior citizens some help with upgrades and repairs to the homes they own.

Helping Hand signups continue through Sept. 12. To be considered for the program applicants:

— Must be a single female homeowner or senior citizen
— Applicant’s name must appear on the assessor’s role.
— Is to be done at your owned residence.
— Can be completed within 1-2 days or less.

C-SPAN to feature Carson City history and authors for nationwide August broadcast

Carson City will be in the national spotlight as film crews from C-SPAN will begin taping a segment beginning July 8 that will feature local history and authors that will air to a nationwide audience in August.

Nevada Film Tax Bill Generates No Action

CARSON CITY — The Assembly Committee on Taxation listened to testimony Thursday on Senate Bill 165, which would issue transferable tax credits to producers who film in Nevada.

The sponsor of the bill, Sen. Aaron Ford, D-Las Vegas, spoke of the benefits that film production would bring to Nevada.

“In order to attract productions that bring revenue to our state that create long-term good jobs, we need to play on a level playing field,” Ford said. “SB 165 is in fact a jobs creation act that specifically targets productions we’re not currently attracting.”
