CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed Bruce Breslow as director of the Department of Business and Industry, effective November 12. Breslow is currently Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

With all the latest news of widespread doping and cheating in professional bicycle racing, it really got me thinking of how much racing has influenced today’s cycling. CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded its 26^th consecutive month of taxable sales increases in August, when consumers spent $3.7 billion on goods and services for a 7.6 percent jump over August 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

The last decrease in statewide taxable sales came in June 2010, when a 0.3 percent decline was reported over June 2009.

Taxable sales grew by 8.1 percent in Clark County and jumped double-digits in Washoe County to 10.5 percent.

CARSON CITY – Statewide taxable sales totaled $3.55 billion in July, a 4.7 percent increase over July 2011 for the 25^th consecutive month of increases, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

Clark County taxable sales were up 5.4 percent, while Washoe County saw a 5.6 percent gain over July 2011.

Ten of Nevada’s seventeen counties recorded an increase in taxable sales for July 2012 compared to July 2011. Eureka, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, and White Pine counties recorded decreases.

The essential health benefits plan for Nevada will be the benchmark set of health care services that will be required in all individual and small group health insurance plans starting in 2014.

CARSON CITY – Nevada casinos had an impressive month in July, taking in just over $1 billion in revenue from gamblers for a 17 percent gain over July 2011, the state Gaming Control Board reported today.

It was the second $1 billion month this calendar year, which has not occurred in Nevada since 2008, said Michael Lawton, senior research analyst for the state gaming agency.

“A $1 billion month is a number that we like to see, it’s a very strong number,” he said.

Yesterday was my last official day in charge of Carson Now. Today I am heading off to Silicon Valley and the adventure of being a Knight Fellow at Stanford University.

I'm happy to report that I'm leaving Carson Now in good hands. Actually, two sets of hands, which will mean more news and better service for the people of Carson City.

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded two straight years of increases in taxable sales through June, with a statewide gain of 7.9 percent over June 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

Taxable sales totaled $3.9 billion in June compared to $3.6 billion in June 2011. For the 2012 fiscal year, taxable sales rose 7.6 percent over 2011.

Clark County taxable sales were up 8.9 percent in June and Washoe County saw a 3 percent gain.

As the new fall term begins, the college welcomes several academic faculty members who have joined WNC in 2012 to fill crucial vacancies. Dr. Robert Whitcomb is the most recent, arriving in time to teach business courses this fall. He hails from Haines, Alaska, where he retired as director of Human Resources and Organizational Development for the Chilkoot Indian Association, a Native Sovereign Nation there.
