Decided where to go to college yet? Filled out all the applications? Been accepted? Now what? As if that was not difficult enough, now comes the time to think about moving, what to take, what not to take, whether or not it is better to live in the dorms or get an apartment. And then there is the toughest question of all: refrigeration? College life is scary at first.

On Monday at the Capitol grounds in Carson City, Nevada made several historic firsts for both our state and our country with the inaugurations of members of state government.

CARSON CITY — Two Justices on Monday joined the Nevada Supreme Court and a new Chief Justice has become the administrative leader of the Nevada Judiciary. Justice Abbi Silver and Justice Elissa F. Cadish were sworn in as Justices during an inaugural ceremony this morning in Carson City.

Good day Carson City, it is Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. After snow and wind blew into the capital city Sunday and overnight, we are looking at clearing but breezy skies in time for today's inauguration on the capitol grounds. Today is also the first day of classes for Carson City School District after winter break. As of the time of this writing, no delays have been announced.

Monday is inauguration day at the State Capitol in Carson City. Motorists can expect traffic impacts around downtown Carson City near the Capitol prior to the ceremony.

Nevada's 30th governor will take office on Monday, Jan. 7 at an inauguration ceremony held in front of the State Capitol in Carson City.

Stephen F. Sisolak, Nevada's first Democratic governor in two decades, was elected on Nov. 6, 2018. He will take the oath of office on the front steps of the Capitol Monday at 11:30 a.m., according to his inauguration web site.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval made the following statement Thursday after the state’s rainy day fund achieved its highest ever balance of more than $293 million this morning:

Both North Dakota House of Representatives and Senate in Bismarck will open their February 21 and 22 sessions respectively with Hindu mantras, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Reno based Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the North Dakota Senate and House. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English interpretation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

CARSON CITY — 2018 was an exciting year for the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. As we put 2018 in the rear-view mirror, we’d like to celebrate some of our more notable highlights from the past year, and share a glimpse into what’s in store for 2019.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval issued the following statement Friday regarding the 2019-2021 budget building process and priorities:

Members of Veterans of Foreign War, (VFW), Post 3726 are angered by the damage caused to the new Battle Born Monument on the capitol grounds in Carson City. A handful of skateboarders using the monument as a skate park showed an appalling lack of respect.

We understand that Gov. Brian Sandoval intends to replace the damaged stone by the end of the year. We applaud this decision and fully support him in this endeavor, as this monument identifies Nevadans who have fallen in service to their country.

We thank the governor for his efforts to repair the Battle Born Monument.

We’ve seen analyses of what happened in Nevada’s 2018 general election and heard various claims and characterizations. Under our leadership, the controller’s office has been known as nerd central because we rely on numbers, facts and quantitative analysis, instead of glittering generalities and snappy narratives. So, let’s do that for the election results.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed Executive Order 2018-30 to have flags in the state flown at half-staff now until sunset on Dec. 30, 2018 as a mark of respect and in remembrance of the life and service of President George H.W. Bush.

1941-2018

Andrew, better known as Andy, was born on his family’s ranch in Yerington, Nevada. He was the fourth of five children of Albert “Burr” and Marion, including Al, Fred, Madeline and Mary Lou.

Andy enjoyed his upbringing in Yerington, making friends, working on ranches, playing football, excelling in scholastics and having more than his share of fun. His accolades from high school included being elected Governor of Boys State and later being inducted into the Yerington High Football Hall of Fame.

RENO, Nev. — The AlertWildfire network of mountaintop fire cameras is working with utility companies and local and state government to expand their networks into more and more areas around the state, especially in the urban and wildland interfaces.

The Battle Born Memorial was unveiled today on the State Capitol grounds in Carson City behind the Nevada State Library and Archives, dedicated to Nevada’s 895 fallen service members.

UPDATE 9:40PM: 100 percent of ballots for Carson City have been counted, including absentee and early voting. Here are the final results for the contested races:

CARSON CITY — In partnership with the History Channel and Charter, Spectrum Communications, Carson High School will host a ‘Take a Vet to School’ event in the school’s library, Wednesday in honor of Veteran’s Day.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of the Battle Born Memorial to Nevada’s military fallen on Friday, Nov. 9 on the state capitol grounds in Carson City.

Beginning around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, a seemingly endless army of tiny monsters, goblins and ghouls moved into the West Side of Carson City.

Join us for a special appearance by Adam Laxalt, Republican candidate for governor, hosted by the Carson City Republican Party at our headquarters, 1971 California St, Carson City, on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10:15AM to 10:45AM.

As Nevadans decide who will be our state leaders for the next four years, we want to highlight the most significant project affecting the controller’s office and many others.

Parents and trick-or-treaters found a safe and fun alternative — or perhaps a precursor for those that can't get enough of costumes and candy — to traditional Halloween night trick-or-treating at the Carson City Community Center's Boo-Nanza Tuesday evening.

Western Nevada College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will hold a vigil on Tuesday at noon at the flagpole in front of the Bristlecone Building at the Carson City campus.

Nevada's celebration of statehood provides for a bevy of activities that showcase the Silver State's best. From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

When it comes to industry, Nevada has been known since its infancy for the three majors: gaming, mining and ranching.

However, in the last decade, we’ve seen an expansion into many other industries as well, with technology quickly becoming the most prevalent since Tesla relocated to our desert and began the trend of big tech companies building in our region.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will lead this year’s Nevada Day parade as the grand marshal. “I’m overwhelmed, and I’m honored,” Sandoval said during an interview in his office. “Nevada Day is an important day to me. I love this state and appreciate this state. It’s given me everything I have.”

The greatest day of the year is close at hand: Nevada Day. The day in which the capitol of Nevada, Carson City, practically shuts down to celebrate our statehood, which took place on October 31, 1864.

While the majority of the United States don’t celebrate their Statehood, those that do participate don’t have quite the same gusto for the celebration that Carson City does.

What does it mean to be a Nevadan? What does it mean to be Battle Born?
