Battle Born Memorial in Carson City unveiled to honor fallen Nevada military
The Battle Born Memorial was unveiled today on the State Capitol grounds in Carson City behind the Nevada State Library and Archives, dedicated to Nevada’s 895 fallen service members.
According to State Senator David Parks, who spearheaded the memorial, the process began in 2013 when the memorial was approved. Last year, the remaining funding was established, and construction began earlier this summer.
“This memorial reminds us that freedom isn’t free,” Parks said in his address.
Among the speakers were Parks, Gov. Brian Sandoval, and architect Zak Ostrowski.
Gov. Sandoval spoke for some time, including a reading of names of fallen Nevada soldiers and service members, all the way back to the Civil War.
“All of these heroes died for an idea greater than themselves, and the idea of the American spirit,” Sandoval said. “We are a free people because of their service, their courage, bravery, and patriotism. Nevada will never forget the sacrifice of the service men and women, and the sacrifice of their families.”
Architect Ostrowski along with his team members offered words of gratitude.
“I want to thank the fallen for their sacrifice,” said Ostrowski, “and I want to thank the active duty military members here today for their continued sacrifice for the people of Nevada and of America.”
The memorial is inscribed with each name of every fallen Nevada service member from the Civil War to Afghanistan.
“This place in my opinion is holy ground where our heroes stories will be shared and remembered,” said Sandoval.
