Justice Gibbons begins term as Chief Justice, 2 Justices join the Nevada Supreme Court

CARSON CITY — Two Justices on Monday joined the Nevada Supreme Court and a new Chief Justice has become the administrative leader of the Nevada Judiciary. Justice Abbi Silver and Justice Elissa F. Cadish were sworn in as Justices during an inaugural ceremony this morning in Carson City.
Chief Justice Mark Gibbons will serve throughout 2019 and will be joined by Associate Chief Justice Kristina Pickering. The Chief Justice is the administrative head of the Nevada Judiciary and the public voice of the Nevada Supreme Court.
Chief Justice Gibbons will represent the Judiciary at the Nevada Legislature and present the State of the Judiciary address to lawmakers on March 21, 2019.
Under the Nevada Constitution, only Justices in the last two years of their current 6-year term of office are eligible to be Chief Justice. Chief Justice Gibbons and Justice Pickering chose to share the duties, with Justice Pickering assuming the position of Chief Justice in 2020.
Justices Silver and Cadish join the full court for oral arguments at 1 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 8) in Las Vegas. On Thursday (Jan. 10), both Justices take a ceremonial oath of office at 3 p.m. at the Clark County Government Center in Las Vegas.
Justice Silver has been practicing law for more than 30 years and has served as a judge for more than 16 years. She is the only judge in the history of Nevada to be elected to every court in Nevada’s court system. Justice Silver has been elected to the bench six times by the citizens of Nevada, including as one of three inaugural judges for the Nevada Court of Appeals.
In July of 2007, Justice Cadish was appointed by Governor Jim Gibbons to fill the position of District Judge in Department 6 of Clark County’s Eighth Judicial District Court. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Justice Cadish served as an attorney focused on commercial litigation and employment law. Justice Cadish was President of the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys from 2004 to 2006, and remains an active member in that organization.
