This event may not be as exciting as Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs triumph over the Cleveland Indians, ending a 108 year title drought, but anyone who ever attended Carson High School or Douglas High School knows that its rivalry has lasted equally as long.

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting! We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker will be Captain Robert T. Wiley, plankowner master of USNS Carson City, (T-EPF 7). Captain Wiley assumed this command on January 16, 2016 when the USNS Carson City was christened at Austal USA Shipyards in Mobile, Alabama.

Come to Gold Hill to see Erik Holland’s show of recent work from his travels around the state! It’s at Maynard Station on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12. There will be an opening reception on Friday, 5 to 9 pm with refreshments and a no host bar.

The show continues on Saturday from 2 to 6 pm, again with a no-host bar — this IS a saloon, after all. This is a great opportunity to have a piece of original work from one of Nevada’s most respected artists. And his work is still affordable — besides the framed pieces on the walls there will be a table of unframed work, most of it $99.

October is behind us and this November weekend kicks off the holiday season with craft fairs, art shows, and plenty of fun. Get a jump on those New Year’s resolutions by participating in the first of the ‘Be Bold, Run in the Cold’ 5 or 10K runs that Ascent Runs is sponsoring. VIRGINIA CITY — Lara Mather, Executive Director of the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum, will offer a program on the history, restoration, exhibits and archives at the museum, as part of the Gold Hill Hotel’s Friday Night Showcase at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum is a crown jewel on the Comstock.

After an action-packed Nevada Day Saturday, Sunday traditions carry on, such as the 35th Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the Carson Colony gym. Take the kids up to Virginia City for one last chance to catch Thomas the Tank Engine at the V & T Depot. It may be a little rainy, but the show must go on at the NV Day Carnival and Festival at Mills Park.

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Get those costumes ready, the Halloween parties start tonight. Ed’s Doghouse’s party kicks off at 6 p.m. and is celebrating proprietor and namesake’s birthday as well. Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar has DJ Mobeatz and DJ Cillo keeping you on the dance floor. Scaryoke at Whiskey Tavern combines karaoke, beer pong, and drink specials for a super crazy fun time. Body-painter extraordinaire, Lynzie Ruckuer, teams up with DJ Brunch Dizzle for an American Horror Story themed party at Remedy’s.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies have responded to a traffic accident that happened at around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday morning across from Gold Dust West in the 2100 block of East William Street.

First responders on scene report two vehicles involved. Ambulance personnel are checking on injuries. Motorists are advised to keep clear of the area and to expect some east and westbound traffic delays.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 17-23, 2016. Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Carson Street will be closed between Musser and Fifth on Monday only.
— Fifth Street is open to east and westbound traffic, Musser Street is open to east and westbound traffic.
— Robinson will be closed at Carson Street, both east and west side for the week, Monday through Friday.
— Carson Street will be open north and southbound Tuesday through Friday.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Giving the community one last chance to hear and meet the candidates for mayor and supervisor prior to the start of early voting, the Carson City Chamber is holding a Candidate’s Forum at the Gold Dust West on Monday, Oct. 17.

Ginger, a dog adopted from the shelter in Carson City, went to the Barn Hunt National and won big. She now can add the 2016 Grand National Championship, Versatility Championship, and Games Silver Medalist to last year's Games Championship. This makes her the most decorated dog in all of Barn Hunt's more than 22,000 competing dogs by winning the Gold in all three divisions.

Nevada Business Connections will host its monthly breakfast on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Gold Dust West Casino, 2171 E. William Street, Carson City.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes, business lessons come flying at me faster than I can take notes about them. Ideas are sort of like orbs.
