Mac the Naw: New Year's 2017 brings Topaz derby and ice fishing on Sierra lakes

Hello fellow anglers, I hope you have a safe and Happy New Year. I will be bringing in the Naw year at Topaz Lake with 500 other freezing souls. The water level is up 12 feet from this time last year, both of the boat launches will be open. The Topaz Landing Marina will be open with rental boats this year.

Carson City deputies make probation violation and warrant arrests

A 41-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested Friday, 11:12 p.m. in the area of East William Street and Rand Avenue for a felony warrant alleging violation of bail conditions, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Mac the Naw Sierra fishing report: Mountain lakes freeze but not enough for safe ice fishing

Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The lakes in the higher altitudes have started to freeze and ice fishing will be upon us soon. I ask anglers to resist the urge to venture out on lakes and ponds until we have at least eight inches of solid ice.

It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

American Indian Achievement Awards celebrated Saturday

The Nevada Indian Commission will honor four Nevadans for their contributions to the American Indian community at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City, at the American Indian Achievement Awards Banquet and Silent Auction, now in its seventh year.

Carson City arrests: Two booked on felony burglary charges after thefts made at 3 stores

Two Reno area men were arrested on felony burglary charges Wednesday after allegedly stealing merchandise from Kohl’s, Home Depot and Walmart, loading the stolen items into a vehicle in front of the stores, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
