GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — UPDATE 6:30 a.m.: Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports firefighters made progress Tuesday on the 16,553-acre Washington Fire eight miles south of Markleeville, Calif. Lighter winds and conditions more conducive to aggressive ground and air suppression helped crews contain five percent of the fire by the end of the day.

Happy Wednesday, Carson City! Today just jumps right in and gets going from the start. The Pony Express re-ride runs through town this morning, recreating the ten day trek from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA. The Kings Canyon Trailhead opens today after a ceremony thanking all those involved in the undertaking. A 29-year-old Carson City woman was jailed Monday on felony charges of elder abuse and preventing a victim from calling 911 after allegedly breaking into the home of her 67-year-old mother and twisting her arms and hands when she attempted to call for help, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

UPDATE 10AM TUESDAY: Washington Fire swells to 16,544 acres. Crews are working to construct a containment line south of Highway 89 and north of Highway 4 to prevent the fire from spreading toward Markleeville. Smoke continues to waft into Carson Valley and Carson City.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — UPDATE 5 a.m., Tuesday, June 23: Smoke from the Washington Fire in Alpine County drifted over Carson Valley early Tuesday morning, plunging air quality into the “very unhealthy” range, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental protection.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Monday, June 22: The lightning-caused Washington Fire in Alpine County south of Markleeville grew to more than 8,000 acres as it moved through to the north side of Highway 89 and into Bagley Valley Sunday.

Crews managed to contain an estimated 10 percent of the perimeter of the fire by Monday morning.
The extreme fire activity being witnessed with the Washington Fire is primarily due to strong erratic winds and severe drought conditions. These two variables also played a role in firefighting efforts for both air and ground support yesterday.

UPDATE 7:30PM: The Washington Fire burning in Alpine County, south of Markleeville has burned 6,500 acres, according to the latest from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports a 75-acre wildfire, dubbed the Washington Fire, is burning near Silver Peak in Alpine County, pushing up a large plume of smoke visible from Carson Valley south of the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury filed a motion Thursday to dismiss charges against an elderly Douglas County man who shot his frail 86-year-old wife who was hospitalized after she had suffered paralysis from a fall.

William Dresser shot and killed his wife, Frances, in a third-floor hospital room at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. He had been charged with murder with a deadly weapon.

As part of its cultural commitment to living sustainably with the environment, The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is boosting its clean-energy capacity with the construction of seven new solar arrays built by Reno nonprofit Black Rock Solar. In addition to the 113 kW of power BRS built for them in 2011, BRS is currently building seven new Carson City area arrays for the tribe.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra is bringing back their traditional July Fourth Concert in the Park. Set for 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Park in Gardnerville, right after the Gardnerville Fun Run, this free concert is an ideal way for families to celebrate the Fourth in an old fashioned, small town setting. Bring your picinic and a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the patriotic line up of traditional July Fourth tunes.

Western Nevada College has named 322 students to the Dean’s List for the 2015 spring semester. To qualify for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

The weather app on my phone says that it’s supposed to be a sunny weekend hitting a high around 91 degrees. That sounds like summer to me! Wednesdays are good for music in Carson City. Nothing like a good jam to get you over the workweek hump. Start out at lunchtime with blues at Comma Coffee. Enjoy music with dinner at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. The party is at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, though. Tonight they are hosting a Canadian country-tinged, psycho punk rock n’ roll band called The Creepshow. Named as “One of the top bands you need to know about” by Alternative Press, a band like this doesn’t wander into our valley often.

Two were arrested Saturday at a Carson City grocery store on misdemeanor battery and petit larceny charges after they allegedly struck loss prevention agents who had detained them for shoplifting, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A Kentucky woman was jailed Wednesday on burglary and multiple felony drug charges after being caught allegedly stealing merchandise from Walmart, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
The woman, Lacey Min Hehl, 30, told officers she had planned to sell methamphetamine, found among her belongings, in order to go to a music festival in Arkansas.

It’s now official. Systems Consultants, the private computer firm in Fallon that conducts the annual computerized drawings for Nevada’s big game hunting tags, has posted the results of the 2015 drawings at its website huntnevada.com for the entire world to see.

A 59-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Tuesday on a felony warrant issued the same day out of Victorville District Court in San Bernardino County, Calif., on suspicion of committing illegal sex acts.

A 19 year-old Carson City man, Alejandro Rios-Geurrero was arrested Saturday at 5:12 p.m. in the 2100 block of Highway 50 East on suspicion of two felony counts of burglary.

A 46-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday in the area of Stanton and Woodside streets on suspicion of possession of a stolen car and meth for sale, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
