A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday in the 200 block of Mary Street on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A new computer and software system created by a Carson City man using interactive avatars to help those on the autism spectrum with social, conversational and motivational skills made its debut at the 2015 National Autism Society Conference this month in Denver.

Kimi Cole of Gardnerville described her typical day. “I get up in the morning, shower, eat breakfast and go to work,” she said. “I do my laundry, clean my house, go to the grocery store. That’s what being transgender means to me.”

The Salvation Army is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for disadvantaged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Central Douglas County, Northwestern Lyon and Storey counties until 6:30 p.m. Monday.

At 3:30 p.m. Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm producing torrential rainfall about 10 miles southeast of Gardnerville. Flash flooding is expected to occur. Excessive rainfall over the warned area may cause mud slides near steep terrain along Highway 395 and near Gardnerville Ranchos.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce hosted their 70th anniversary celebration on Monday, June 29, at Nevada State Prison. The event included tours of the now-closed prison, barbecue dinner and a concert with Lacy J. Dalton.

A 23-year-old northern California man died and one person remains in critical condition following a head-on crash Sunday south of Gardnerville on Highway 395, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A 52-year-old woman was arrested early Monday in the 500 block of East William Street on a gross misdemeanor charge of possession of dangerous drugs and two lesser charges of violation of bail conditions, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Two cars and a truck pulling a travel trailer were involved in a fatal accident at Highway 395 and Leviathan Mine Road at 12:53 p.m. Sunday, resulting in one death and two being transported via helicopter to Renown in Reno.

UPDATE 10PM: As of 9:35 pm, crews are responding to the fires. Two fires have been reported above Jacks Valley, one above Autumn Hills, one above Job’s Peak Ranch and one near Fay Luther Canyon. The fires are going to be monitored through the night and will be addressed during the daylight hours.
No structures are in danger at this time, said Sgt. Pat Brooks of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for western Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. The warning is through at least 6:15 p.m. and extends through the Carson Range.
It is expected to impact the east side of Lake Tahoe and into Carson City and Carson Valley. Wind gusts to 60 mph, penny sized hail and heavy rain are possible with this storm, according to the weather service.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — The Washington Fire, located 3 miles south of Markleeville, California has burned 17,622 acres and is 29 percent contained as of Saturday morning. The primary objective of suppression efforts remains the protection of the community of Markleeville.

Thunderstorms are forecasted that could bring stronger winds and lightning, which could hamper firefighter’s efforts.

Bikes, and cars, and brews: oh my! Downtown Carson is awash in activity on Saturday. Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

There's a free block party in Gardnerville on Sunday, June 28, to benefit a local girl, Sierra, who suffers from a brain tumor. Hosted by Northern Nevada Hotspot, the Southgate Block Party will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1475 Southgate Drive. Carson City area casinos saw gaming revenue increase by 7.7 percent in May, compared to last year during the same month, according to figures released Friday from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Firefighters on the Washington Fire, 3 miles south of Markleeville, California continued to optimize lower wind conditions to increase containment.

Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports significant progress was made Thursday towards containing the western flank of the fire south of Markleeville. The fire, named after the Lady Washington Mine near the origination point, has burned 16,490 acres and is now 15 percent contained.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — UPDATE 7:30 a.m., Thursday: Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports firefighters made progress for the second consecutive day Wednesday on the 17,205-acre Washington Fire eight miles south of Markleeville, Calif.

Firefighters upped the containment of the fire to 10 percent on the sixth day of suppression efforts. The primary tactical priority continues to be preventing the fire from reaching Markleeville. The next priorities are to contain the fire in the Wolf Creek and Monitor Pass areas.
