Carson City, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, and Reno will have fireworks displays starting around 9:30. Minden, Gardnerville, and Genoa aren’t slacking, though. Festivities can be found just about everywhere.

King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.

With a three-day holiday weekend, you’ll find many things throughout the area to compete for your attention, but there’s no fun like the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Downtown Wine Walk. The festivities begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2. Grab a wine glass, map, and hand stamp and you will have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins.

The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

Highway 395 closed near Lee Vining due to growing wildfire
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 9:16amUPDATE 9:10PM: The Marina Fire burning north of Lee Vining in Mono County, Calif., has grown to 600 acres as of Friday night, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The Tioga Lodge and two additional residences have been evacuated. Lee Vining is under an evacuation advisory. There are approximately 300 personnel on the fire. Highway 395 in the area remains closed.

UPDATE 2:11PM: The wildfire burning north of Lee Vining in Mono County, Calif., closing Highway 395 is now estimated to be 350 acres, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The Tioga Lodge has been evacuated and Lee Vining is under an evacuation advisory. Several powerlines have been de-energized for firefighter safety. Highway 395 remains closed.

Motor Officer Challenge returns with action packed events Friday and Saturday at Mills Park
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 06/22/2016 - 2:17pmMotor officers from around the country return to Carson City this week to train and compete in the 13th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge at Mills Park.
The event runs Thursday through Saturday at Mills Park with Thursday a practice day for the competitors. The big events that bring the most spectators and participants will be on Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature music, vendors, food, demonstrations and contests.
Nevada environmental health investigate viral video of alleged chemical waste dumping
Submitted by editor on Wed, 06/22/2016 - 12:02pmA viral video circulating since Tuesday that purports to be illegal chemical waste dumping is being investigated by Nevada environmental health officials. A Mound House company acknowledge to the Reno Gazette-Journal that it is the company depicted in the video.
The 1 minute, 51 second video has appeared on Reddit and other social media channels. it was posted by a person with the name of Luke Murray and has generated nearly 500,000 views.

Dana Andrews stars in the World War II Classic, A Walk in the Sun

Dana Andrews stars as Sgt. Tyne, a platoon squad leader who assumes command of his platoon as they trudge through the Italian countryside in search of a bridge they have been ordered to blow up encountering danger and destruction along the way.
General admission $5; Senior/Student $3; Free for members. Doors open at 6:00pm with trivia and discussion at 6:30pm. The film begins at 7:00pm at The Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street.

The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

Carson City Sheriff's Office adopts cash-strapped cat shelter to benefit from motorcycle competition

Pony Express Re-ride hits the trail June 15 - 25
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Wed, 06/08/2016 - 9:12pmThe National Pony Express Association will be conducting its Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail from Sacramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, June 15 - 25, 2016. It is expected to pass through Carson City at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16.
This Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24-hour a day, non-stop event by over 600 riders and horses over the 1,966 mile route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri. It is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation.
