Quality of Life Initiative 20th Anniversary Free Concert at Silver Saddle Ranch, Sunday, August 7, 2016 from 3 to 8 p.m.

Carson City Open Space in partnership with the Mile High Jazz Band Association will host four bands, food trucks, and burros to pet at Silver Saddle Ranch located at 4901 Carson River Road.

The 21st Annual Silver Dollar Classic Car Show continued today in Mills Park, where more than 400 classic automobiles and custom hot rods are expected to be showcased throughout the weekend.

The annual Silver Dollar Classic Car Show kicked off Thursday and continued Friday night at The Max Casino on S. Carson Street.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

SATURDAY:

Tonight, Thursday Aug. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. Geeks Who Drink will host Trivia Night at the Carson City Library courtesy of the Friends of the Carson City Library. The event is open to everyone 21 and older who bring their ID. Non-alcoholic drinks will be provided courtesy of the Library. More may be won as the night progresses!

Retirement was the green light for Dayton resident Michelle O'Brien to start working again.

Once she retired after 20 years of state service with the Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, O'Brien decided she would finally have the time to devote to soap-making, a hobby that has grown into a creative endeavor.

An enchanting evening of chamber music with the Aurelia Chamber Players performing works of Beethoven, Chausson and Dohnanyi. The Aurelia Chamber players is pleased to feature many internationally acclaimed musicians as well as the Concert Master, Principal Cellist and other members of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. This is the fundraiser concert of the Aurelia Players Chamber Music series so no ticket necessary. See our facebook page for details. The Salvation Army is collecting backpacks and school supplies for disadvantaged children through August 17. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County will receive backpacks and school supplies as needed. The Salvation Army will have a distribution of the back packs and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the School Districts for distribution to children in transition.

Sunday is the last chance for celebrity sightings at Edgewood Golf Resort in at south shore Lake Tahoe as the American Century Celebrity Championship tournament comes to a close. Learn about the legacy of Douglas County’s Dangberg family from the rancher’s grandson, author Steve Archard. Locals enjoy a special price on the Virginia and Truckee steam train, or the McKeen Motor car at the Nevada Railroad Museum.

SUNDAY:

All summer long, Thursday nights have been known for the Silver Dollar Classic Car meet-ups with upwards of 80 vehicles showing off their chrome and fuzzy dice at various venues throughout the valley. This Thursday’s cruise night kicks off a weekend of nostalgic car fun. Head to the Plaza Events Center at 5 p.m. for the annual Cruise Night Show and Shine, Music and Spirits and hold onto your bobby sox.

Visitors to Comma Coffee enjoyed folk and bluegrass sounds Friday night outside in the adjacent courtyard.

Guests of Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro-Lounge were treated Friday night to live music from an outdoor stage in celebration of the club's second year in business.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Recently, one of our directors was travelling and saw a fun billboard (on the east coast, not local) advertising super heroes. It gave her an idea. She came back to me and we began to brainstorm. Super heroes can be from any walk of life, have any personality, and be any age.

It’s kitten season and Catmandu would like to remind cat owners to please be responsible and spay or neuter your pets. There are already far more cats and kittens than homes for them; and the babies just keep coming.

Kids won’t want to miss the Capitol City Triathlon: swim, bike, and run your way to the winner’s circle. A private developer from Reno has purchased the membership-only Thunder Canyon Golf Club in southern Washoe Valley, renaming it Toiyabe Golf Club, a press release from the Bauserman Group said.

On July 27 at 7:05 PM the Reno Aces will play the Sacramento River Cats on the Greater Nevada Field in Reno. As a way to raise money for the Carson City Library, the Friends of the Carson City Library are currently selling ticket vouchers at $16 for Left Field Reserve.

With the Pokemon Go app exploding in popularity among teens and adults across the country, Carson City dispatch has received numerous calls of "suspicious people" who have turned out to be game players, walking around empty buildings in the middle of the day and night.

Our good friend Joe Reinbolt of Carson City sent us this great photo of a family of geese walking the crosswalk at Mills Park. He took the photo last fall and thought we could use it for a great Monday morning photo.

The weather may be cooler, but the chili is hot. Head to Glen Eagles for the final day of the Chili competition. Enjoy a picnic and a free concert in Genoa: the Sagebrush Rebellion performs at 5 p.m. If you’re dreaming of snow, then the lecture on legendary Tahoe winters might just get you through the day.

Registration and signups for fall boys and girls AYSO Carson City Youth Soccer will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Talents Athletic Center next to Harbor Freight: 2749 N Carson St. The program is open for children ages 4–18.

Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Head to Mills Park for the First Annual Polynesian Festival in the Marv Teixeira Pavillion. One night each year, John Street, adjacent to Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City is transformed into an intimate music venue for Concert Under the Stars, and for a few precious moments the air is filled with great music, a lot of love and laughter in order to raise money that continues the The Greenhouse Project’s mission of educating the next generation of farmers and feeding the under served in the community.

Since 1989 the annual Nevada Day Classic, an 8K Run or 2-mile Run/Walk presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, brings together hundreds of runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — as Halloween costumes are encouraged — who hit the streets of the historic West Side of Carson City with Guide Dog Puppies-in-Training serving as course marshals to woof them on! Families and groups can participate in the walk, enjoy the race breakfast, and help celebrate Nevada by enjoying the Nevada Day Parade that immediately follows the Classic.

United Blood Services Nevada Region says it has an unprecedented critical need for blood of all types. Current forecasting projects a 4,700 whole blood pints shortfall in July and greater shortfalls throughout the summer.
