What Works: Opportunity doesn’t knock, you develop a habit of noticing it
Yesterday, I woke up at 5 a.m. to start my radio show, Drive Time: Your Motivational Drive in the Morning, airing 6 to 8 a.m. every Monday on KNVC 95.1 FM Carson City Community Radio. Having a morning show seemed like a pipe dream a year ago.
I recalled the career paths of the likes of Dr. Laura Schlessinger or even a shock jock like Howard Stern. And, honestly, it seemed like a tall order that I would ever have a show of my own. Yet, it happened. How? I opened up to possibility.
When you open up to what’s possible versus focusing on what’s impossible, you increase your awareness of the opportunities available to you.
Here’s an example. Have you ever played “Slug Bug?” When you focus on finding VW Bugs it seems everyone on the road is driving one. Why? Because you are focusing on it. Just for fun, try it with something that isn’t a Bug. You will find more of whatever you focus on.
So, how do you use this to find opportunity?
Step One: Get Clear About What You Want to Achieve
When you were playing “Slug Bug” you got clear. You weren’t just looking for a car. You were looking for a VW Bug, not a Jetta, a Bug. Getting clear and specific about what you want to achieve is the first part of finding it. This applies to anything you want to manifest.
Step Two: Visualize It In Detail
After you get clear and specific, you need to visualize what you want in detail. When I found the show proposal link on knvc.org, I visualized my show. I really thought about what would go into it. I imagined myself on air. I played it out like a movie, using all my senses, sight, sound, taste, and touch. See, the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is really happening and what is imagination – especially if you get rich enough with your imagination.
Step Three: Make Focusing on it a Habit
Regular visualization is important. Every time I would see a post on Facebook about someone talking about KNVC, I would visualize. It became a trigger for dreaming about my show. I sent an email. I didn’t get a response immediately. I reached out to one of the radio hosts. I decided to tweak and resubmit my proposal a few months later.
Step Four: Reward Yourself for Noticing
I would reward myself with a simple smile when I saw something related to the station. I rewarded myself with every little action I would take toward my goal. The simple act of noticing opportunity, or the desire of opportunity, reinforced the behavior.
Step Five: Act on the Opportunity
When I got an email back, I answered it. When I got a call for an interview, I showed up. When I was invited to train, I gave my all. Manifesting opportunity is, ultimately, all about action when small things are happening in the direction of the dream.
Next Monday, my radio show will be all about taking action on dreams. I will have Orgena Rose, a Hollywood television producer and singer, as well as Dr. Erin Oksol, a local psychologist a business mentor who specializes in getting business owners on mission, on the show. Of course, none of that would be happening if I didn’t get clear, visualize, make it a habit, reward myself, and act on the opportunity I saw. It really does work. The floor is yours, Carson City!
