Carson City leaders recognized at 2016 Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Leaders Awards program
Carson City bicycle and pedestrian advocates were recently recognized by the Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board at its 14th annual awards program.
Donna Inversin of Muscle Powered and Jeremy Vican of Carson Valley Trails Association were selected as advocacy and advocates of the year; Carson City Visitor Bureau Executive Director Joel Dunn was picked in the division of Trails Association Event Planning Promotion for his work organizing Epic Rides and Cortney Bloomer, organizer of Western Nevada Safe Routes to School, was honored with a Special Achievement award for her work.
The awards, presented at the annual Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit in Lake Tahoe, singled out individuals, agencies and groups for improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities, safety and advocacy.
“Bicycling and walking offer many benefits,” NDOT Assistant Chief of Multi-Modal Planning and Program Development Bill Story said. “While not only improving our health, bicycling and walking connects our communities, reduces congestion and provides for cleaner air by reducing vehicle emissions. Whether government agencies or individuals, these award recipients have contributed to greater mobility choices and increased quality of life by promoting and integrating safe walking and bicycling into our communities.”
With proven environmental, economic and health benefits, the public demand for bicycling and walking opportunities is growing. Bicycling and pedestrian planning across the state have shown a surge in public interest in bicycling and walking, with more than half of vehicle users surveyed saying they would drive less if other forms of commuting were available.
The Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board was created by the Nevada Legislature to advise state agencies on policies, programs and facilities, as well as promote programs and facilities for the safe use of bicycles and pedestrians in the state. The board consists of 14 members appointed by the Governor.
