Carson City's Richards Crossing residents receive gift giveaway from Red Hat Society

The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.
Richards Crossing is a Nevada Rural Housing Authority 39-unit affordable housing development. Eight units are reserved for chronically homeless veterans and the other 31 units will receive project-based rental assistance. This development serves homeless and low-income individuals, and provides job training, life skills coaching and a range of other helpful services. The aim of offering these resources is to help tenants maintain housing and to move towards self-sufficiency.
Throughout the year, Richards Crossing organizes events and activities for its residents. In fact, the Classy Sassy Bear Ladies are no strangers to this community. They visit once a month to offer crafting classes. During the next class, residents will learn how to repurpose paint brushes into festive Christmas decorations.
The RHS is an international society dedicated to reshaping the way women are viewed in today's culture. RHS supports and encourages women to pursue fun, friendship, freedom and fulfillment of lifelong dreams. The Classy Sassy Bear ladies consists of Chapter Queen and self-described hugger Rhonda Watkins, Sandy Kinser and Gail Bitetti. Read more about the Red Hat Society on its website here.
Richards Crossing opened in 2017 in collaboration with the local Friends In Service Helping (FISH) organization. Financing of this project included the use of 2015 Low Income Housing Tax Credits through the Nevada Housing Division with Richman Group Affordable Housing Corp. and American Express; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development HOME Program funds through the Nevada Housing Division; Affordable Housing Program funds through the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and Charles Schwab Bank; Carson City 2016 Community Development Block Grant; and Home Depot Foundation grant funds.
