Grand opening this weekend for Sierra Le Bone
Sierra Le Bone, a boutique for dogs and cats as well as their owners, will celebrate their grand opening Friday and Saturday at their new location at 880 South Stewart Street, across from the fire station.
The business moved in October from their previous location in the Raley's Center, and co-owner Jan McMinn said they are very happy in their new place. Even though their old store was just a few yards off busy South Carson Street, they had trouble converting that traffic to customers as other businesses in the same building began closing their doors.
"We moved in, and six months later Round Table left," McMinn said. "Then Port of Subs closed, then the check place closed, and then in July the nail salon closed."
They now have a the old Hank's TV Repair building all to themselves, with access directly off South Stewart Street, which McMinn said has boosted their visibility.
The store offers top dog and cat foods, including dry, canned, raw dehydrated and frozen foods. There is also a bounty of boutique items for pets, great treats and even Christmas presents for pets and their owners.
Besides their selection of food in stock, they also take special orders.
"If we don't have it, we can get it," McMinn said.
After the first of the year, McMinn said her and her partners plan on renovating the rear of the building to set up self-serve grooming stations where customers can come to bath and groom their dogs. They will also have a professional dog groomer who can do the work for you.
With the advent of the big-box pet stores, small businesses like Sierra Le Bone rely on their extensive knowledge and customer service to set themselves apart. For instance, McMinn said during the warmer months they offer customers free dog obedience training classes. They also have an American Kennel Club judge who teaches classes for people who want to show their dogs.
For their grand opening they will have treats for humans and well as dogs. There will also be a canine nutritional expert on hand to answer questions about feeding dogs. In addition, a representative will also be present from Aloha Medicinals, a Carson City company that manufacturer nutritional supplements that have been shown to be effective in fighting cancer in dogs.
