Saturday's Carson City Holiday Crawl to raise funds for local school children in need
Downtown Carson City businesses will be offering special signature food and drink items during the second annual Holiday Crawl this Saturday.
“We’re going to have bands at Telegraph Square and McFadden Plaza, and DJs and karaoke all around,” said Meliah Gonzales. “There really is going to be something for everyone.”
Gonzales, a bailiff at the Carson City Courthouse, has served on the Holiday with a Hero committee since its inception 12 years ago.
The crawl benefits Holiday with a Hero, which pairs children in need with cops, firefighters, servicemen or other volunteers to spend $100 on Christmas gifts at Walmart for themselves and their families.
Gonzales said the goal for this year is to raise $25,000 for children in the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program, which serves children who live in motels, cars, campgrounds, grandparents or double up with other families.
Gonzales said the children often take care of the basics first during the shopping spree.
“They buy necessities, things you and I take for granted,” she said. “They buy hygiene products, food and clothing.”
With what they have left, she said, they will buy toys for themselves and their siblings.
“Without this program, their needs wouldn’t be met. Without this program, they wouldn’t have gifts,” Gonzales said. “For a lot of these children, this is the only Christmas they are going to get.”
Another benefit for the children, she said, is to show them potential career paths with volunteers and also help heal relationships after they’ve seen their parents or family get in trouble with the law.
“For some of the children, they are afraid of us,” she said. “This is an opportunity to fix that relationship.”
The Crawl will run 5-10 p.m., with early check-in beginning 4 p.m. at the Studio inside Adam’s Hub. Participants will receive a cup, bracelet, a map and the first drink for free. More than 20 business will participate.
Revelers are encouraged to wear Christmas attire, with awards being given for the best costume.
