Where in the world is Santa Claus? It’s very easy to find out where Santa is, and how you can track him as of Dec. 1. and running through Christmas Day.
No more searching the skies for Rudolph’s Red Nose. Like just about everything else now, Santa can be tracked on your computer or your cell phone any time you have the urge to know if Jolly Ole Saint Nick (as he is known in Europe) is on track and when he will be flying over Nevada and most especially Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Dayton, and even Lake Tahoe.
Of course, there’s always an app for everything, and there’s a very special Santa Tracker app that can be downloaded free in the Apple Store, Google Play and Windows Marketplace.

Beginning Dec. 1 each year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) soldiers stationed at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado and over 1,200 volunteers help to track Santa’s journey until he lands on the last rooftop on December 24, Christmas Eve.
NORAD took over the responsibility of tracking Santa in 1958 when a Sears Roebuck & Co misprinted Santa’s phone number in an ad that was run in a local newspaper in Colorado Springs. The misprinted number was that of the Continental Air Defense Command’s director of operations who was surprised to hear a child on this unpublished line known by so few.
The colonel on duty, having children of his own, responded good naturedly playing the Santa role. When more and more children started calling Santa, he decided to staff the center with as many airmen as needed to pass messages to Santa. The Command (today NORAD) then started tracking the whereabouts of Santa that has become more sophisticated as technology has advanced.
Children from more than 235 countries across the world log on to follow Santa’s course in real time.
While tracking Santa’s whereabouts on the site, you can play games, watch videos, read stories and so much more. It’s a great way for the whole family to count down to Christmas and keep beloved traditions alive!

Take photos with Santa this Friday night, December 3, after the Silver and Snowflakes Festival tree lighting in front of City Hall. The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. and the city will be all aglow by 6:15 p.m.
