Holiday events in Carson City, Dayton, Carson Valley and Virginia City this first week of holiday season

The Holiday Spirit has reached the capital city, and with the first week of December you can jump start your season with a number of festive events in our local community!

Wednesday and Thursday Dec. 1-2

— Carson City Senior Center Christmas Fair can be found at the Hidden Treasures Gift Shop Wednesday and Thursday, with all items handmade by seniors including a variety of quilts, placemats, canes, jewelry, art, baby gifts and more! Check here for more information.

Friday Dec. 3

— Silver and Snowflakes Returns to Carson City with annual Tree Lighting, Concert, Sleigh Rides and more. The annual festival of light begins at 4 p.m. with the concert beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the Capitol building. To learn more, please click here.

— The Virginia City Christmas Tree Lighting will take place at the Bucket of Blood lot on the corner of C and Union Streets beginning at 6 p.m. Followed by the David John and the Comstock Cowboys Christmas in the Sierra Concert, Piper’s Opera House, 7 p.m. and Train O’Lights at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. For more information, click here.

Saturday Dec. 4

— Holiday with a Hero crawl. The night following the Friday, Dec. 3 Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights at the Nevada State Capitol is a Saturday evening celebration designed specifically for grown-ups, the 6th annual Holiday Crawl to benefit Holiday with a Hero. To learn more, click here.

— Bring your furry friend for a photo with Santa to benefit Carson City CASI. Santa will be at Benson’s Feed Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to take pictures with your fury friend! To schedule and appointment and to find out more, click here.

— Carson City’s Santa Train is back for its 37th Year, pulled by the vintage Virginia and Truckee No. 25 steam engine, the Santa Train will begin Dec. 4 and will continue for the first three weekends in December. For more information, click here.

Carson Valley

Carson Valley's 25th Annual Parade of Lights returns Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. in Minden with the parade theme of “Magical Carson Valley.” Residents and visitors will line Highway 395 from Gilman Ave. to Minden Park to watch the parade. For more information, click here.

— Carson Valley Meats ‘Ag and Artisan’ Holiday Faire will be held Saturday at the old Store Dairy in Gardnerville, including the region’s most talented creators and producers, farm animals, food, raffles, 4-H and FFA exhibits, and more! For more information, click here.

Dayton

Dayton Chamber Presents Small Town Christmas and Night of Lights Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at Our Park in Dayton, during which Santa and the Grinch will be on scene to welcome in the holiday season. To learn more, click here.

Virginia City

— 7th annual St. Mary’s Art Center Holiday Faire happening Dec. 4-5 in Virginia City, hosting more than 22 artists and makers for a festive, vibrant and fun weekend of arts, crafts, refreshments and holiday music. To learn more, click here.

— See the spirit of Christmas travel through Virginia City as Christmas cheer lights up the streets with the annual Parade of Lights, Saturday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. Sip some hot cocoa and enjoy sweet treats from our local shops as you take in the warmth of the Christmas spirit. Sunday Dec. 5

Carson City emergency crews and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called to a single vehicle crash early Monday evening in the northbound lane of I-580 near Lakeview.

It is never too early to think about Christmas and the holidays and this last week of June is no exception with the launch Monday of ticket sales aboard the 2017 Polar Express via the V&T Railway.

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday for felony suspicion of domestic battery with strangulation, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit wilderness ranger scouting expeditions last week have brought back some updated trail conditions for those planning to venture into Desolation Wilderness.

Members of the Sierra Nevada Youth Optimist Club will be hosting robotics camps at Western Nevada College in Carson City, July 17-21.

There will be a volunteer and planning meeting this Tuesday night to prepare for the Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival and VIP dinner. The volunteer meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m., at Battle Born Harley-Davidson, 2900 Research Way, Carson City.

School may be out for kids in Nevada, but the need for healthy meals never ends. Nearly 4,000 students in Carson City are eligible for free and reduced lunch, making up more than 48 percent of the student population.

I suspect this last week of June will just fly by. Before you know it, you’ll see the annual Fourth of July Carnival setting up in Mills Park. Make plans now for the monthly downtown Wine Walk on Saturday; it’s always a fun time. Don’t think you’ve got to wait for the weekend for some fun, though. You’ll find live music, karaoke, art, and dancing most every day, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take a break from the work week.

Gusty winds and low humidity expected to arrive Monday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Carson City, western Nevada and extreme northeastern California.

Carson City's Grocery Outlet will be running a food drive to benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center Food Bank beginning Saturday, July 1 through July 31.

How much fun can you pack into a weekend? That isn’t purely a rhetorical question – it’s more of a challenge. Grab the kids for a day at the Dangberg Home Historical Ranch where storytellers are the featured guests. Locals are in the spotlight at the Rockabilly Riot, the Iron Rebels Car Show is for resident cars only. The bells are ringing at the First United Methodist Church. Handbell Ensemble group, Tintabulations, presents a free concert at 7 p.m.

I’m a lazy gardener. I try to minimize my work load while maximizing aesthetic appeal and practical function. I avoid plants that are needy, like those that need extra fertilizer or pruning or those that are susceptible to insects or disease. I’m not into planting annuals.

Festivities continued early Saturday at Mills Park as the Rockabilly Riot Car Show launches another jam packed weekend in Carson City. Coinciding with the Iron Horse Training Challenge, hot rod enthusiasts by the hundreds filed into the parking grounds to feast their eyes on some truly spectacular custom made and souped up classics.

UPDATE 2:17PM: From Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch: Firefighters stopped forward progress of the Coleman Fire at around 10 acres. Resources are in the mop-up stage.

UPDATE 1:56PM: While the Kit Kat Fire burning east of Carson City near Mound House has been contained with 2.8 acres having burned, firefighters were called to the Silver Springs, Stagecoach area for a two-acre fire, called the Coleman Fire, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. The wildfire is burning near Coleman Drive. It was reported at 1:13 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department and rescue were called Saturday afternoon to a single vehicle motorcycle crash in the area of Clearview and South Carson Street.

Escaping the recording breaking hot weather in the West this week is reason enough to visit Lake Tahoe but Squaw Valley has just announced another reason to visit: extended hours for skiers and snowboarders.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested Friday for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor driving without a valid license, driving without registration and not having insurance, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

This week marks the start of competition for Juliet Favero, the Carson City teen and 2017 Carson High graduate who is competing in the 60th Distinguished Young Women National Finals in Mobile, Alabama.

The heat continues this weekend for the Carson City region with above average temperatures and highs near 100 and then some cooling by early next week, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Nevada police officers and local law enforcement agencies including the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Nye County Sheriff’s Office and Reno Police Department negotiated tough turns Friday during the 14th Extreme Motor Officer Challenge competition at Mills Park.

After a 4-3 comeback victory, the Reno Aces and Tacoma Rainiers faced off Friday for the second time in the four game series.
