Carson City Library named Connect Nevada's 'Broadband Hero' for excellence
During the third annual Connect Nevada Broadband Summit held at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Carson City Library was named Connect Nevada’s 2013 Broadband Hero.
The summit theme, Learning in the Digital Space, was designed to promote access, adoption, and use of broadband in education. In collaboration with Governor Sandoval’s Nevada Broadband Task Force, Connect Nevada is working to bring the benefits of universal broadband to the state.
In 2010, the Carson City Library was awarded a significant Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant that has provided resources for technology tools and instruction. Branded under two library monikers the @Two Digital Learning Center and the Business Resource Innovation Center, or the BRIC, these spaces are hives of community activity, growth and development, earning recognition from Connect Nevada.
"The Carson City Library is proving itself to be an essential community link. The technology tools and opportunity to learn how to use them, and more importantly learning with and through technology, is what was possible through the library's Broadband Opportunities Technology Program grant. The efforts of our library professionals over the last three years moved the opportunity to reality. I couldn't be more proud," said Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.
“The total BTOP grant was $596,999. For Carson City’s portion request, the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation provided a 27.2 percent cash match of $162,658, adding to the $434,341 award. We have leveraged the tremendous opportunities we were fortunate to receive for technology through federal and private support. We not only developed our digital learning center, but we’ve also embedded the library within other youth serving organizations and school district classrooms. This is already making a difference, and we will continue to build on that success,” said Carson City Interim Library Director Tammy Westergard.
On Nov. 13, 2013 the Carson City Board of Supervisors and School Board adopted a joint resolution to co-adopt each board’s strategic plans for education with emphasis on access to technology and opportunities to learn with it. For its part, the Carson City Library will adopt its 2014-2019 strategic plan in December. Key objectives emphasize the library’s role as a community asset that inspires learning with technology tools and programs designed expressly for increasing digital literacy.
“Carson City Library’s strategic plan is the community’s directive to City departments and public officials to adhere to citizen expectations regarding library services. Excellent public library services protect Carson City’s learning environment, enrich public safety through education and civic engagement and add to the community’s authentic learning opportunities,” said the Carson City Library’s incoming director, Sena Loyd, who assumes the director role Jan. 3, 2014.
