Carson City Curry Street project to be unveiled, Passport to Downtown celebration follows

Event Date:
October 26, 2018 - 10:30am

Carson City's downtown Curry streetscape project will wrap up ahead of the Nevada Day parade with a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, Oct. 26 followed by the third annual Passport to Downtown celebration.

Breaking ground this spring, the top to bottom downtown Curry Street project is part of a series of capital improvements designed to bring long term economic growth and enhance the quality of life in Carson City.

Similar projects have shown economic benefits in many communities, including decreased commercial vacancy rates, increased retail sales revenues, increased tourism, increased property values and the public investment has led to private investment well beyond the public investment.

See the video here or below which outlines the project.

In the spring of 2018, the downtown improvements continued with the Downtown Curry Streetscape Project on Curry Street from Musser Street to Robinson Street and five side streets between Carson Street and Nevada Street.

The project replaced major water and sewer utilities, underground power lines, installed energy efficient LED streetlights, and will enhance accommodations with wider concrete/paver sidewalks featuring streetscape amenities.

After the Curry Streetscape Project finish, the focus will shift to the southern part of Carson City to implement major complete streets improvements along the South Carson Street corridor. The South Carson Complete Streets Project is currently under design with construction anticipated to start near the end of 2019.

"I want to thank everyone, and our business community in particular, for putting up with the construction impacts and then to our staff and Q&D Construction for doing their best to minimize those impacts,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

“This truly was a community project during the planning, design and construction and now the community can enjoy a downtown place to come to, rather than drive through,” added Darren Schulz, Director of Public Works.
Curry Street and side streets will reopen Friday, Oct. 26, 2018.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be hosted on Telegraph and Curry streets at 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include Jeff Bean, Vice President of Q & D Construction, Mike Bennett, Director of Engineering at Lumos and Associates, Bob Fredlund, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce Darren Schulz, Director of Public Works, and Bob Crowell, Carson City Mayor.

Following the ribbon cutting, downtown Carson City will radiate with entertainment and activities for the Passport to Downtown from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kick off the Nevada Day weekend, enjoy all the Downtown Carson City has to offer and celebrate the completed Curry Street Improvement Project with live music, street performers and family fun while you get your free Passport stamped at participating, downtown businesses. Redeem your Passport for raffle tickets. The more businesses you visit, the more raffle tickets you will earn.
