Carson City arrests: Man jailed after allegedly swiping $800 in casino winnings, burglarizing car

A Carson City man was arrested early Friday morning on felony suspicion of burglary, grand larceny and attempted burglary after allegedly stealing $800 in jackpot money from a player at a casino. During the investigation, officers recovered items stolen from a vehicle burglary that happened earlier, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested was Keith Dean Curtis, 36. Along with the felony charges he also had a misdemeanor warrant for violation of a suspended sentence.

Deputies were dispatched just before midnight to a casino in the 3700 block of South Carson Street. The victim from the casino theft called 911 to report what happened and advised he was chasing the suspect.

According to the arrest report, the victim told deputies that he had won about $900 at a machine and was cashing out. He gave the casino employee some money and was getting a total of $800 back. There were eight $100 bills on the counter. The suspect then came up to the counter, took the money and left.

The suspect was described as bald wearing a black jacket who had left behind a backpack that had letters addressed to him inside. Also inside the backpack was a player’s card, several chargers and a Bluetooth radio adaptor, which turned out to be items stolen from the victim of vehicle burglary that happened earlier, according to the arrest report.

As they were looking for the suspect, deputies heard security at JC Penney yelling at someone in the bushes on the east side of the store. They located Curtis who then ran east on Eagle Station and ran back westbound through the JC Penney parking lot. Curtis then stopped running and started stashing the $800 in bushes. He was detained by deputies who located the money, which was given back to the victim, the arrest report states.

Security, who saw Curtis hiding in the bushes, said they had called dispatch earlier to report a man who was pulling door handles at a car rental company. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect at that time. Security advised Curtis was the male who had been attempting to get into cars at that location, the arrest report states.

A search of Curtis showed he had registration to the victim of the vehicle burglary in his pocket. That victim had called dispatch to report that his vehicle was burglarized and that he was missing property, which was subsequently found in the backpack the suspect had left behind at the casino. Curtis is being held on $73,000 bail.
