WNC to receive $4.4 million federal grant to assist job training
More than $4.4 million in federal funding will enable Western Nevada College to offer students more services to meet the skilled labor demands of today’s businesses. WNC in Carson City was selected as Nevada’s lead community college in the nation-wide $450 million job-driven training grants, as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program.
Administered by the Department of Labor, Nevada’s four community colleges will receive a total of $9,921,831 from October 1 through September 30, 2018.
“Western Nevada College is thrilled with the news that the Nevada Community Colleges request of nearly $10 million will be fully funded under the federal TAACCCT grant,” said WNC President Chester Burton.
Dr. Robert Wynegar, WNC Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, said, “We are very pleased to be able to expand services to our students in a variety of areas. The grant will allow the four colleges to increase academic offerings and services to prepare them for today’s workforce.
Burton, who is a military veteran, said he is especially excited about the funding that will be dedicated to expand and enhance college Veterans Services and programs at the four colleges.
“This news, coupled with the recent announcement of the Tesla plant being built in nearby Storey County, has really made this September one to remember for the college,” Burton said.
WNC’s already successful Student Veterans Center will be able to hire staff members to respond more readily in assisting students with integration, registration, credit analysis, and more.
The funding is also intended to improve WNC’s offerings in machine tool technology, information technology, welding technology and health care (Certified Nurse Assistant-CNA).
David Steiger, WNC director of Economic Development and Continuing Education, said the grant will play an important role in training Northern Nevada workers.
“This grant award will allow us to continue to meet the ongoing demand for skilled entry level workers,” he said. “It will enhance and extend our very successful accelerated technical training programs.”
These intensive programs allow trainees to complete a full technical curriculum, complete with nationally-recognized industry certifications, in one semester, Steiger said.
