Boys & Girls Club offers back to school activities, learning programs for Carson City area kids
As the 2020-21 school year continues, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada is packed with learning programs and exciting activities for kids of all ages.
The Carson City location at 1870 Russell Way is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with dozens of hands-on programs. Spots inside the building are limited to 135 kids each day, but countless activities will be held throughout the year.
“We’re open and having a great time,” Executive Director Katie Leao said. “These times are difficult for kids, so we’re trying our best to make the most of having fun activities for them to learn and enjoy.”
The Boys & Girls Club has several core programs including arts, character and leadership, health and life skills, culinary, education and career development and STEM research. Leao and the Carson City staff have a specific emphasis with three new programs this year.
A brand new reading comprehension and math program with online activities were recently added. The club partnered with the Carson City Library to set up a library inside the complex, where kids can check out books and read throughout the week.
Mondays are dedicated toward virtual learning for elementary and junior high school students. Kids work on homework with intuitive programs in between classes.
“We help them get online to their Zoom calls or get online in general,” Leao said. “They have designated times to do that throughout the day with our programming.”
Last but not least, a new physical education program has been added with an emphasis toward outdoor activities. Kids can enjoy games that involve running, jumping and other cardiovascular movements.
“We’re really focused on those three aspects and it’s going well,” Leao said. “We have lots of things to do for kids and we’re happy to share them.”
With a slew of events and programs, the Boys & Girls Club has a lot to offer throughout the school year. Each kid and staff member inside the Carson City complex follow the mandatory state safety guidelines with facemasks, social distancing and routine sanitization.
Leao and staff disinfect each room and make sure kids are washing their hands to keep others safe.
“We continue to clean hourly and kids are constantly washing their hands,” she said. “We disinfect rooms and we’re following those guidelines for everyone’s safety.”
The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada is hosting a “Whatever it Takes” campaign dedicated to building the futures of kids with scholarship programs, daily meals, summer programs and much more.
The community can participate by signing up for a monthly subscription. Subscription prices vary and can help the club find more ways to help kids engage in fun activities in a safe environment. Visit the link here for more information.
“It’s important that we strive to help kids as much as we can,” Leao said. “We will do whatever it takes to make sure everyone is safe and taken care of.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada will remain open throughout the school year. For more information on prices and registration, visit the link here.
