TRIAD to educate Carson City residents Tuesday on new Smart911 system benefits
Carson City TRIAD will host 911 System: How to Prepare for First Responders, a Smart911 presentation, on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The event is free and open to the public.
Smart911 is a free service that enables first responders to be better prepared for your situation before they get to your door. When registered with Smart911, information about users’ medical histories and home access instructions can be transmitted to dispatch and responders, allowing them to provide better care. Information for other household occupants, like roommates, children and pets can also be added to your account.
“The system is currently in place, but always evolving,” said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. “Some of the new advancements that will provide better care also include texting 911, video texting, advance life alert and care instructions, and household critical information.”
The event will be held in the Nevada Room at the Senior Center. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the presentation start time. A $50 gift certificate, donated by Casino Fandango, will be raffled off after the presentation.
“Smart911 can be an incredibly useful tool, especially for vulnerable members of our community who live alone, have multiple medical conditions, or who may not be able to clearly communicate with 911 dispatchers or first responders,” says Courtney Warner, executive director for the Carson City Senior Center. “We want to spread awareness about this service, so everyone can be better cared for in the event of an emergency.”
Additionally, the Carson City Senior Center will host Smart911 registration workshops to aid seniors in the registration process. Workshop registration is limited to six, with signups at the Senior Center reception desk. The workshops will be hosted from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, Wednesday, Oct. 2, and Wednesday, Oct. 9 and from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, Thursday, Oct. 3, and Thursday, Oct. 10.
