9/11/01: Life Lessons Learned
September 11th 2001: A day that not only changed American History but World History as we knew it. A day where everything literally stood still. Everyone was affected. No one was immune to it. The skies were clear of every flying object known to man. The streets around the nation were empty. Schools had full classrooms but as quiet as if no one was there. All you could hear was a TV in the background with the history making news that was unfolding. A stunned nation and world watched in horror, feeling helpless.
I remember waking up in the morning and it being a normal everyday morning until my mom came into my bedroom and told me in a somber tone to look at the TV. From then on, I couldn’t put any sort of thought together. All I can remember thinking was: “Is this really happening?” and “Why?” The day went by as slow as it could. Every class that day seemed like an eternity. Very few words were spoken, and eyes did not blink. All of us were trying to comprehend what we were experiencing.
And yet, we continued to move forward. The nation untied in the coming days, and become stronger than ever. American flags flew from house to house and car to car. Strangers were helping out strangers without a second thought. From that one moment, it seemed that every person learned valuable lessons: Compassion and understanding.
More importantly, what this world changing event taught me was to always be mindful of people around me, try to be the best person I can be every day and to cherish every moment with everyone in my life because tomorrow is never guaranteed. I have learned to not hold pointless grudges or anger with anyone especially with those you care about the most. Life is too short to hold onto anger or selfish pride. Sometimes I need to remind myself but I always do one way or another.
We all should stand united not just today but every day. Let’s remember those who selflessly gave their lives for others on that fateful day and for our troops in the armed forces who continue to this day fight for our great country and freedoms.
Do not forget to hug your loved ones every chance you get, and may God Bless America.
