St. Mary's Art Center Hosts Fall Art Reception Featuring Las Vegas Artist Kim Johnson
St. Mary's Art Center, a non-profit organization located in the former 1876 St. Mary Louise Hospital in historic Virginia City, is hosting its Fall Art Reception on October 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event includes live music by Brother Dan, light refreshments, a new exhibit by Las Vegas artist Kim Johnson, and access to all seven art galleries spanning across four floors.
St. Mary’s Art Center is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, marking 60 years since it was founded in 1964 by Father Paul Meinecke and local artist, Louise Curran, after the building closed its doors as a hospital in 1942 and sat vacant for 22 years. St. Mary’s Art Center is the longest operating 501(c) 3 nonprofit in Storey County.
“We are ever thankful for the continued support of our local and arts communities, as were our original founders,” A. Perry, Executive Director of St. Mary's Art Center, said. “Our seasonal art receptions are just one of the many ways we support the arts, artists, and share the benefits with our Northern Nevada community.”
Kim Johnson is a native Las Vegas artist with decades of experience in studio art, gallery practice, and connecting to the community through art. She’s interested in depicting the emotional and essential ties to the natural environment and urban surroundings. Johnson tackles small and large works in the studio, large paintings outdoors, and paintings in public spaces.
Her exhibit at St. Mary’s Art Center features 29 paintings from two ongoing series. Other exhibits throughout the art center include a Historical Museum Exhibition and Artisan Gallery, Northern Nevada Artists and Themes, part of their permanent collection, and Virginia City Characters and Town by artist Danette Steele. Experience a diverse showcase of Comstock Art and learn the rich history of the 1876 former hospital.
