Carson City weather: Gusty winds anticipated through Friday to increase fire danger
Gusty winds will arrive in the region Wednesday and continue through Friday, especially from the Reno and Carson City area northward into far northeast California and northwest Nevada causing forecasters to be concerned about fire danger.
These winds, combined with low humidity and dry fuels, will produce conditions favorable for rapid fire spread, according to the National Weather Service. Afternoon and evening gusts around 30 mph are likely with wind prone locations hitting 35 mph. The onslaught of winds has prompted the forecasters to issue a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday and Thursday with the likelihood of being upgraded to a Red Flag Warning.
Winds on Thursday may be the strongest with more widespread gusts of 35 to 40 mph. If you have outdoor plans, be careful not to spark a fire, and also pay attention to the weather on area lakes as conditions could become choppy.
Anyone in the vicinity of dry lake beds and desert areas — including the Black Rock Desert where Burning Man is being held — may experience more blowing dust than usual, with near zero visibility possible at times.
The Labor Day holiday weekend around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas looks to be mostly sunny and pleasant, with highs in the upper 70s through Sunday and a high of 81 for Monday.
