It was a surprise for many around Carson City waking up Monday, Presidents Day, to snow after a night of rainfall when forecasters had noted snow would be limited to the mountains. Surprise, surprise as the internet meme song goes.

Gusty winds and a slight chance of showers arriving Friday will turn to abundant sunshine and a gradual warm up around the Carson City area and Lake Tahoe region through Memorial Day weekend and beyond, according to the National Weather Service.

Winter weather continued overnight in the Sierra and into the valley floors, causing headaches for the likes of not only Tuesday morning commuters trying to maneuver the roads, but big rig freight haulers who are stuck on Interstate 80 near the Nevada state line due to heavy snow.

In typical Nevada fashion, there are weather advisories for both fire and snow on the horizon, really cementing in the apocalyptic mood of our current times.

There is a fire weather watch in effect from 2 p.m. Friday through Saturday afternoon due to strong winds and low humidity for all of Western Nevada.

Southwest winds increase today ahead of the oncoming storm hailing from the pacific. Strong gusty winds continue into Saturday with some lower humidity during the day on Friday.

Winds will weaken some for Sunday, but should remain gusty.

The first winter snowstorm of 2020 has passed, and there shouldn’t be any more precipitation coming as the storm continues to move east.

The weather today will have a high of 38 and a low of 24, with partly sunny skies. The winds have also died down, with a breezy 4-5 mph being the top out for the day.

With a strong cold front pushing into the region that will bring gusty winds and low humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northern and western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region. Weather conditions will be especially dangerous along the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes.

Low pressure will move inland and bring gusty winds along with some cooling and chances for light valley rain and Sierra snow showers by Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

While many in Western Nevada will be celebrating the first day of Spring on Wednesday after having experienced a sometimes wild, wet and stormy winter, Mother Nature appears to have her own agenda ahead with valley rain and Sierra snow in the forecast beginning late Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

After a break from active weather Monday and Tuesday another storm system will move into the region Wednesday bringing high winds, feet of Sierra snow and the potential for heavy valley rains, according to the National Weather service.

A major winter storm will bring blizzard conditions and several feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra into Thursday night with heavy rain around the Carson City and lower valley regions, according to the National Weather Service.

After a few days of quiet weather for Carson City and western Nevada, a more active storm pattern is taking shape beginning as early as this Saturday and continuing well into next week, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 5:13PM: Slick road conditions and multiple spinouts are being reported by the Nevada Highway Patrol during the Tuesday evening commute. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and take extra caution when driving. The snow is expected to end before the morning commute, but roads may remain slippery. The weather service Winter Weather Advisory was activated late this afternoon due to snow arriving earlier than expected.

Gusty winds and low humidity will arrive in the Carson City and Sierra region Tuesday along with a cooling weather pattern, which has prompted the National Service to issue a fire weather watches and warnings.

With a chance for thunderstorms and winds expected to kick up with them, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch covering much of the Carson City region beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Noting a potentially dangerous fire weather situation with gusty winds and low humidity ahead, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning from Friday afternoon to Saturday night for Carson City, the Sierra and throughout much of the entire western and northern Nevada region.

The summer heat will settle into the Carson City region this week, with daytime temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 or higher Monday through Wednesday in the capital city and Carson Valley and 100-plus in Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.

The hot and very dry weather will continue through Wednesday around the Carson City region, with stronger winds Monday afternoon as low pressure passes toward the north, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag fire weather warning.

Hot weather continues into the weekend and next week for the Carson City region as high pressure keeps western Nevada in a dry air mass with high temperatures remaining above season averages.

A noticeable cooling trend will return to the Carson City region beginning Friday with breezy conditions followed by sunny skies and below normal daytime high temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Friday around the Carson City region, bringing some water ponding along the local roads, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 2:48PM: The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Douglas County, Carson City, Central Lyon County and southern Wash County until 3:30 p.m.

An area of low pressure is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Carson City region through much of the week, with the best chances for storms Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Windy conditions will persist Wednesday afternoon and evening around Carson City while snow is expected to move into the Sierra region with impacts to travel over the mountain passes around the Lake Tahoe Basin through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
