Region's new NHL-regulation ice arena will be completed by late November, says Reno Ice
According to Joel Grace, President of Reno Ice’s Board of Directors, the NHL regulation ice arena will be opening in early December, with an estimated construction completion in late November.
"A group of local business professionals who had been traveling to South Tahoe from Reno on a weekly basis to play in a men’s league recognized the need for a rink in Reno, which is the largest winter sports demographic area without an ice arena," said Grace. "With the support of a local, lead donor, they decided to put together a non-profit to build Reno Ice."
The Greater Reno Community Ice Skating Association (GRCISA) became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in order to generate community support for construction of Reno Ice, a state of the art ice sports arena in south Reno, according to the Reno Ice website.
Reno Ice will offer the Northern Nevada community various programs such as private lessons, public ice skating sessions, hockey leagues, broomball, curling, trade shows, tournaments, performances, figure skating, private parties and special events on and off of the ice.
One of the big draws for Reno Ice is hockey. For years, those interested in playing hockey in Carson City, Gardnerville, Reno and beyond have been forced to travel to South Lake Tahoe for the closest rink. Hockey will be one of the major focuses of Reno Ice.
"Our Co-ed Adult League will have two divisions, A and B, and we will have a Sunday Funday draft league where teams will be mixed according to skill level," said Grace. "We will also have an Adult Learn to Play program. Our youth teams U8, U10, & U12 will compete in the Reno City League. Our older teams, U14 and High School will compete in Northern California."
The new facility is important to the community not only because it is filling a need for a winter sports complex, but because it will be a draw for tourism as well.
"The only of its kind in greater the Reno-Sparks area, the new center will contribute to the economic health of the community by attracting tourism, providing a new event venue, as well as offering a gathering place for families, groups and organizations," said Grace.
