Carson City area weather: Windy and cooler with chance of high elevation snow
Windy conditions and cooler temperatures will return to Carson City and surrounding counties beginning Sunday with chances for rain, isolated thunderstorms and high elevation snow continuing into midweek, according to the National Weather Service.
The latest NWS weather discussion says conditions Sunday won't be as intense as they were earlier this week. Still, it will bring choppy lake conditions in addition to localized critical fire weather concerns. There is a Lake Wind Advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for Lake Tahoe.
An upper level trough shifts into the region Sunday night into Monday, will usher in in a significantly colder air mass and increasing rain and high level snow chances, forecasters said.
There is a chance that by Monday morning snow levels may possibly dip to near 6,000 feet as temperatures will be 20-25 degrees below normal Monday, more similar to late October norms, forecasters note.
The combination of rain/snow, cold temps, and breezy northwest winds will be quite the shock to those who aren't prepared, especially if recreating in the backcountry. There are also thunderstorm chances (10 to 20 percent) under the core of the low, in particular south of US-50 and areas near and east of US-95.
While some showers may linger in north-central Nevada into Tuesday morning, the low quickly kicks east Tuesday with a bit of warming and drier conditions. This is short-lived as the next low pressure system follows right behind Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to weather service.
"Interestingly, there is actually better agreement in the placement of this cold low and associated precipitation Wednesday than what ensembles are indicating on Monday. In any event, this brings the return of colder temps, rain and high elevation snow, and isolated thunderstorms as well," according to the weather service.
Temperatures for Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be in mid to upper 70s Sunday, low 60s Monday, around 70 on Tuesday and 61 on Wednesday.
For the Lake Tahoe Basin, temperatures will be in the mid-60s Sunday, low 50s Monday, near 60 Tuesday and 52 on Wednesday.

After that, there will likely be a gradual warming and drying trend will be on track as we head into late week and next weekend with no major wind or rain events on the horizon, forecasters said.
