U.S. Honor Flag to be presented at funeral for Carson City deputy killed the line of duty
The U.S. Honor Flag will be delivered in tribute to Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell, who died in the line of duty Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015. This American flag has traveled more than 7 million miles since Sept. 11, 2001 honoring more than 1,000 heroes.
The flag will be delivered in a state-by-state escort that will originate in Texas, said Chris Heisler, president and co-founder of The Honor Network. It will be presented at the funeral services for Howell on Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Reno Events Center. The procession will begin in Carson City at the Public Safety Complex and make the 28 mile journey from the State Capital to the downtown Reno Event Center.
Howell was also a former United States Marine.
The Flag has been aboard the NASA Shuttle STS-135 Atlantis, funerals for public safety and military heroes, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, the Pentagon, presidential libraries, VA hospitals, the USS Lexington, and various NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and other sporting events.
Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, what is now The Honor Flag was gifted to Heisler by the Texas House of Representatives. A hand written note thanked Chris for his efforts. Signed, Texas House of Representatives. Like many Americans, Heisler felt compelled to take action during a horrific time for the United States, and with this flag in tow, he set out for Ground Zero, according to the Honor Network website.
Along the way, Heisler helped to organize one of the longest police motorcades in the history of the United States, bound for Ground Zero bringing many tokens of support together with other agencies, to our nation's Heroes. Since September 2001, the United States Honor Flag has paid tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty protecting our lives, our homes and our country, and also those who currently serve our communities and our nation.
The Honor Network was founded on the conviction that every person who is committed in service to our communities and country deserves the support of every single American, and that an increase in American patriotism is vital in keeping our great nation united.
