Carson City memorializes Deputy Howell, fallen capital city officers with permanent wreath
A brief ceremony was held Monday at the Carson City Sheriff's Office building to honor Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call a year ago on this date, August 15, 2015.
The ceremony was attended by Howell's family members, sheriff's office staff and personnel, the Carson City Fire Department and city leaders.
The ceremony also honored all of the Carson City officers who have fallen in the line of duty since the city's inception more than 150 years ago. Honored and remembered on this day are Sheriff Blackburn, Sheriff Smith, Officer Carvin, Deputy McDaniel, and Deputy Howell.
The ceremony unveiled a permanent wreath that has been placed at the base of the sheriff's office building flag pole and a bench that that will be placed inside the Carson City Courthouse where Howell had been assigned prior to working temporarily on the patrol beat. The Howell family was also presented a $2,135 donation check from the Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment 630 of Carson City.
Sheriff Furlong acknowledged the eight new deputies who have been brought on to the force this year, and introduced Brenna Bell who began her first day Monday as the department's official Victims Advocate for Law Enforcement, also known as VALE.
The position is a joint initiative between the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Advocates to End Domestic Violence targeting the reduction in domestic violence in this community.
Furlong said Bell will be the sheriff's office front runner working side by side with Carson City officers addressing domestic violence issues. Sheriff Furlong thanked Advocates to End Domestic Violence director Lisa Lee, Advocates for obtaining funding for the position.
