Locals light up Minnesota Street Stage Saturday night
A pair of Northern Nevadans provided entertainment to hundreds gathered at the Minnesota Street Stage at the Brewery Arts Center (BAC) Saturday night, part of the Levitt-AMP Carson City Concert Series.
Athena McIntyre opened the concert at 7 p.m., followed by the headliner, Whitney Myer, at 8 p.m.
Myer is a Reno native, while McIntyre currently hails from Carson City.
Myer became a national name in the music industry when she wowed the judges on the NBC reality television series "The Voice" in 2012. Her specialty is combining the sounds of R&B with rock-n-roll.
Levitt-AMP concerts are family friendly venues. A free wall enticed concert-goers to express themselves creatively with paint and a blank canvas.
Multiple food vendors were present, too, providing nourishment to the crowd. Food trucks from Grandma Hattie's and the Westside Pour House, served up hot eats, while The Do Drop In cut up fresh fruits.
Saturday's performance marked the ninth concert in the weekly summer series. The monetary award from the Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation afforded the BAC the opportunity to put on ten free weekly public concerts this summer in downtown Carson City for residents and visitors.
Next week is the concert finale of the series as the Brazilian band Sambada’ lights up the Minnesota Street Stage with its lively latin music.
The last of the Levitt-AMP concerts starts at 7 p.m. on August 6 in front of the Brewery Arts Center.
The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open lawn and lot setting. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota. Admission is free.
Executive Director Gina Lopez Hill has said that the BAC just announced plans to apply for the grant again for next year. The Levitt Foundation has a history of awarding AMP grants for multiple years, she said.
Online public voting for Levitt AMP Carson City will begin November 1, 2016. If awarded again, the BAC will produce another 10-week concert series in the summer of 2017.
