Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has announced two job opportunities that have become available. The organization is dedicated to serving the needs of the homeless and hungry individuals and families in Carson City.

Front Desk – Carson City
(Hourly Full Time Position)
Responsibilities
Intake & Referral:
• Greet individual clients as they enter; ask about their needs; enter information into client database
• Complete daily tracking sheet, laundry sheet, log/process payments & donations
• Handle incoming phone calls, mail, emails
• Update donor data base
• Enter daily cash register receipts from thrift stores
• Schedule regular and court assigned volunteers needing interviews for placement
• Process medication requests from pharmaceutical firms as directed by Ross Clinic doctors
• Issue rental statements and receipts; run weekly rent report
• Monitor laundry room and showers
• Set up dental appointments; enter dental payments into spreadsheet before mailing.
• Produce month end reports summarizing services provided to clients
• Process outgoing mail; monitor postage amount on meter
• Make signs for specials, closed dates, signs for stores, etc.
• Maintain volunteer data base; teach computer system
• Input information for Certificates for volunteers/Donor’s/etc.
• Run weekly report of shelter volunteer hours worked

Skills/Abilities:
• Minimum of 4 years of office experience
• Strong/demonstrated Microsoft Office and Microsoft Access experience
• Strong people/problem solving skills
• Able to work well under pressure
• Able to adapt to changes quickly; Multi-tasking skills a must
• Bi-lingual a plus
• Normal shift: M-F 8am-5pm

FISH: Manager Food and Volunteer Services-Carson City
(Salaried/Supervisory Position)

Responsibilities
Food Distribution:
• Supervise Family Dining Room staff and operations
• Supervise FISH Food Bank staff and operations, including drivers/ warehouse staff
• Maintain food inventory through purchases and food drives
• Donation/consumption record keeping for the food banks and family dining rooms, for internal and external use
• Supervise off-site “TFAP” commodity distribution for Carson City and Southgate apts., coordinated via Nevada Dept. of Agriculture
• Supervise and coordination food distribution to various counties and attend joint meetings as appropriate.
• Maintain and develop relationships with surrounding business to solicit food donations. (supermarkets, restaurant’s, casinos etc.)
• Coordinate holiday basket inventory and distribution
Volunteer Services:
• Maintain records of Volunteers, including Court Appointed Volunteers (C/A’s) and provide C/A information for internal and external use
• Meet with volunteers and CA’s to develop and assign schedules for various FISH operations
• Develop programs to recognize volunteers, including volunteer appreciation dinners/events
Facilities:
• Supervise custodian who cleans office areas, showers, the food bank, the Ross Clinic, etc.
• Coordinate facility/property/vehicle maintenance
• Maintain cleaning and kitchen supply inventory, and supervise various outside services vendors
• Monthly inspections of fire extinguishers and maintain fire safety equipment per code
Skills/Abilities:
• 2+ years of supervisory experience
• Strong/demonstrated Microsoft Office experience
• Strong people/problem solving skills
• Able to work some weekends-Normal shift: M-F from 8am-5pm
• College Education preferred

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday evening to a motor vehicle crash near the Maverik gas station at East College Parkway and the 3900 block of Highway 50 East.

They were known as “The Oak Ridge Quartet” when they were formed in 1945. The name change came in 1961 when they became “The Oak Ridge Boys.” Several members have come and gone over the years, but the mainstay of this group for the last 40 years are the first four men on the cover of this album.

Roller Derby Scrimmage

Come cheer on both the Junior and Adult teams of Carson Victory Rollers this Sunday as they usher in a new school year and raise money for the Carson City Recreation Division Kid's Klub! See some awesome derby and help this great organization as all the kids head back to school.

Scattered thunderstorms are building around Carson City this Friday afternoon with the area already experiencing some lightning and light rain.

The man accused of firing shots into the home of Carson City Judge John Tatro, and later attempting to firebomb his residence, will face trial after evidence was presented at this week's three-day preliminary hearing, according to the Carson City District Attorney's Office.

A 46-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday morning for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

UPDATE 1:25PM: The fire in a storage lot area off of Arrowhead Drive is under control, burning around a half-acre, said Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon. No additional resources are needed.

UPDATE 1:12PM: Firefighters have made progress on the fire, knocking down much of the flames. The fire started in a storage lot area. Two older vehicles parked in the storage lot area were damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Friday afternoon to a brush fire in the 5400 block of Arrowhead Drive.

The Nevada Department of Transportation opened the USA Parkway extension at noon Sept. 8. At noon Friday, access from both ends of the USA Parkway opened, allowing drivers to travel the 18-plus-mile roadway extension between I-80 west of Fernley and U.S. 50 near Silver Springs.

The Sixth Annual Feds Feed Families Food Drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City brought in 2,722 pounds of food in August, including 1,346 pounds of fresh produce at the Third Street Farmer's Market. All donations benefitted families and individuals served by the Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Friends In Service Helping, also known as FISH.

A Nevada Department of Corrections inmate who walked away from work detail Tuesday near the Carson City office of the Department of Motor Vehicles was taken into custody Thursday night, officials said.

UPDATE: 2:45PM: An inmate was taken by Care Flight for a stab wound following a fight at the Correction Center yard at Warm Springs, according to Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Brooke Keast. The injury was non-life threatening. A second inmate was shot with pellets and did not suffer serious injuries and was not transported. No corrections officers were injured.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department was called Friday morning to the Warm Springs Correctional Center off of Fifth Street for an incident involving an inmate that was reportedly shot with pellets. Care Flight air ambulances have been ordered.

One might think that after Labor Day, it starts to get quiet around here. They would be mistaken. September is chock-full of adventure, starting with this weekend’s Virginia City International Camel Races and the Great Reno Balloon Races. You won’t want to miss the last of the Third Street Stage Concerts in McFadden Plaza: Shane Dwight is tonight’s featured performer. It’s the last day to see the Photography and Regular Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery, they’ll have their new Autumn Show on display Sunday.

FRIDAY:

It began on a December night in 2012. A loud crash woke Judge John Tatro and his wife, Kathy, in their Carson City home. Someone had fired two shots through their front door. The bullets, we now know, passed through the home and shattered a glass door to the backyard.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will hold a meeting next week to discuss interest in the community to form a group to support building and improving dog parks in Carson City.

One of Carson City's most prominent, historic buildings is officially in escrow, according to the property manager for the Ormsby House. Ted Stoever, senior vice president, Northern Nevada Land & Development Investment Services for Colliers International, told News 4 that the "iconic" property is currently in the process of being purchased.
The news was also made to the Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host its first Community Garage Sale on Sept. 23, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are invited to participate as either a buyer or a seller.

CARSON CITY, NV – The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling. Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of an entry form and photos of artwork are due by October 22, 2017.
