C-SPAN visits Carson City to capture unique past with historians, authors

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and invited guests welcomed the 100 million household TV giant C-SPAN and its cable carrier Charter Communications to the steps of the capitol building for the first day of a week-long visit to the capital city.
C-SPAN’s video-journalists aim to capture Carson City’s history and literary journey as told by local historians, published authors and long-time residents. Collected stories will air August 3 and 4 on Charter channels 235 and 236 on C-SPAN’s American History TV and Book TV.
In addition to spending time collecting information, photos and interviews for its programs, C-SPAN video journalist and Community Relations Representative Justine Jablonska will devote Thursday morning to area teens interested in video journalism. The Carson City Library will host community partners from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and teachers from the Carson City School District in the library’s @Two Digital Learning Center.
“With Club and School District leaders, more than fifteen BGCWN teens attended the morning press conference to see firsthand the elements involved in video journalism, and on Thursday morning the same group will participate in a learning opportunity that will include tips from the pros followed by hands-on exercises at the library in the digital learning center,” said Interim Library Director, Tammy Westergard.
In 2010 the library was awarded a significant stimulus grant through the Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP) that has increased community public access to high speed broadband services. 125 internet enabled devises (105 new devises added as a result of the grant) and high end digital media production tools and software are available as well as robust learning opportunities.
“A community partnership like this transports the real world right into the Club. For the teens this is particularly interesting and offers them a chance to develop marketable skills. We’re thrilled to be part of this partnership with the Carson City Library and School District,” said BGCWN Chief Professional Officer Laurie Gorris.
Carson City School District Community Engagement Coordinator Ben Contine agreed: “The Carson City School District’s strategic plan is clear, community partnerships will make the difference for our students. This library-led out of school time learning opportunity with the Club will pay dividends for our students this school year. This is just the beginning of partnerships that are taking shape throughout the community on behalf of our school children.”
