Making the turn: Carson City Sheriff's Office hosts 14th annual Iron Horse Challenge
Nevada police officers and local law enforcement agencies including the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Nye County Sheriff’s Office and Reno Police Department negotiated tough turns Friday during the 14th Extreme Motor Officer Challenge competition at Mills Park.
Designed to promote safety and enhance coordination of motor officers, riders face off in head to head competitions, challenging one another in a main course qualifying round and a two-man rally race.
During these races, officers go through various amounts of loops and tight turns in all shapes and sizes. The four different courses included: a dollar sign, a lasso the shape of Nevada and a horseshoe.
Members of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office who are participating in the event include Deputies Gary Denham, Kevin Cook, John Morris, Joey Trotter and Wayne Wheeler.
Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Matt Smith, who is also participating, explained the vast amount of training these riders went through ahead of time in order to compete.
“These riders are an elite group. Each rider attends a two week motor school. And after attending the school, they have a transition period of going through an officer training program," he said. “They go through a vast amount of advanced trainings so that way they can grow that foundation of their riding capabilities.”
Smith also spoke about the impact this event has on the community.
“I think it brings the community and local law enforcement agencies together. It gives us an opportunity to truly see what kind of training and skills these guys have to exhibit on a daily basis to ride these motorcycles safely," said Smith. "For this reason, they can get to service calls in a hurry without endangering themselves or others.”
Deputy Joey Trotter expressed his excitement toward the event.
“It’s super awesome to see all these guys out here riding like this. It is a real thrill," said Trotter.
The event will continue through Saturday, June 24 as officers will compete in more events and courses. Opening ceremonies and test rides start at 8 a.m. in Mills Park.
