Brewfest and Steampunk roll into Carson City
This weekend will bring a fusion of Steampunk, trains and brews to the capital city. Steampunk ’n’ Trains will run 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, then the Capital City Brewfest kicks off 5 p.m. in downtown.
“We’re telling people to come early, check out the train museum, then head on down and check out downtown,” said Rebecca Bevans, events coordinator for the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum. “Just keep having a good time. We’re all one community, so we should share the love.”
The Brewfest, a fundraiser for Carson City Rotary, will include 27 breweries from all over Northern Nevada and California. It will run 5-10 p.m. Saturday along Carson Street, which will be closed from Second to Fourth streets. General admission is $30. A special wristband is available for $5 to designated drivers.
In addition to beer, food trucks will also be scattered throughout downtown, along with live music.
Money raised will be used for local scholarships and toward local service organizations.
“Our mission is to be engaged in the community, support education and to participate in all different avenues of service,” said Katie Leao, president-elect of Carson City Rotary.
Organizers of Steampunk ’n’ Trains encourage people to dress up for the day, but it is not required.
“The coolest thing about all the steampunk people is they’re very open to all people,” Bevans said. “Everyone will feel welcome. But it’s a fun way to get dressed up and hang out with really creative people and ride a train.”
Anyone in steampunk attire will receive a 10 percent discount at the Fox Brewpub, 310 S. Carson St.
Admission to the Steampunk ’n’ Trains is free, and includes a variety of vendor booths such as clothing, photography, wooden toys, metal art, candles and more.
Food trucks will be on hand, as will Sassafras selling beer.
Wristbands will be sold to allow unlimited train rides and entrance to the museum for $15 for adults 18 and older; $10 for museum members; $5 for children ages 4-17; and free for children 3 and under.
Carson City Rotary is partnering with the Fox Brewpub and the Carson City Visitors Bureau to make the Capital City Brewfest an annual event.
“It brings people downtown while raising awareness and supporting education and youth,” she said. “It’s just a really fun event.”
