CARSON CITY — The old saying that legends never die might also be said about old locomotives. Many of those iron horses, long lost to time or the scrap heap, live on through historic photographs, artwork and the hearts and minds and skillful hands of railroad buffs.

A Carson City family estate presented checks to three organizations on Wednesday amounting to more than $600,000.

CARSON CITY — The holiday season generally doesn’t lack in opportunities for children to have fun, with numerous special events and activities open to all. For children who are battling cancer or those with compromised immune systems, those opportunities aren’t nearly as great.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City launches its 35th year of Santa Train the weekend of Dec. 7 and tickets are available online and at the museum’s depot now.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum Carson City is packing a whole lot of family fun into its annual Harvest Train festivities this year.

The 2019 Ironhorse Rail Camp’s four-day course on train safety and railroad operations is quite the ride at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.

From June 13-16, course attendees explore the basic tasks and operations such as railroad and train safety, specific positions on the train crew and the various railroad equipment used during the 20th century.

Oh what a difference the sunshine makes. The second day of May in Carson City will bring warming temperatures with a daytime high in the low 70s. The event lineup Thursday includes a law enforcement memorial at the capitol complex, a hike at Clear Creek, art showings, a lecture on the historic Transcontinental Railroad, live music and more. CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Railroad Museum opened its doors to the steampunk craze three years ago and the event has proven to be so popular, this year’s event is branching out with a tip of the hat to Burning Man and into a full-on Arts and Culture Day at the Museum.

When the Carson City Library was undergoing renovations earlier this year, it outsourced its “Story Time” program for youngsters to other locations, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will conclude its 33rd year of Santa Train this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has set the dates for its 33rd year of Santa Train and for the second consecutive year, it will be offering special free Santa Trains exclusively for children battling cancer.

This weekend will bring a fusion of Steampunk, trains and brews to the capital city. Steampunk ’n’ Trains will run 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, then the Capital City Brewfest kicks off 5 p.m. in downtown.

The one thing scarier for a child than not being home at Christmas is to be fighting cancer at the same time.

But it's a reality for a number of Northern Nevada children and their families this year.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have added an additional Santa Train ride for children in our community who are battling cancer on Dec. 17 in Carson City.

The Santa Train is arriving this weekend and next weekend in Carson City at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Trains operate this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11 and next weekend, Dec. 17-18.

Part art and fashion, metal and mechanics, the Steampunk movement comes to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City for a Father’s day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18. Historic and futuristic at the same time, the movement melds creativity and imagination with the power of heavy equipment — sort of Victorian Era meets the science fiction.

While the map of Nevada is dotted with ghost towns, many of the state’s famous railroads also left their shadows behind. Author Jim Price remembers the long-lost trains that served Tonopah and more in his new book, “Discovering the Ghost Railroads of Central Nevada.” Price comes to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 9, for a special presentation on his work.

Celebrating its 27th year, the popular Santa Train took a new approach to this year’s programming by enhancing the event with upgraded amenities, expanding to 3 weekends, and optimizing participation by launching a new online ticketing system.

Dr. Todd Gray, DDS and Dr. Heather Parsons, DMD of Valley Pediatric Dentistry, thought this year provided an outstanding opportunity to assist the museum’s efforts by encouraging local businesses to help sponsor the event through donations for holiday decorations and supplies not provided by the museum budget.

Heritage trains at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, a capital tradition, are all set for the holiday season.

In the tradition of Winterail, Silver Rail 2015 is an informal gathering of railroad photographers, artists, writers, historians and preservationists. The event will be Oct. 3 at the Brewery Arts Center and will feature a full day of multimedia presentations of documentary and creative railroad photography and fellowship.
