Third Street businesses open despite plaza construction
Access to businesses along Third Street, between Carson and Curry, has concerned patrons because of construction of the future Bob McFadden Plaza, but these businesses remain open despite detours, Carson City Public Works Engineering Manager Daniel Rotter said Wednesday.
Rotter said construction of the entire plaza project is scheduled for completion around mid-July, Rotter said, with the new accesses to businesses in the area completed sooner.
"We're working on getting these accesses done sooner rather than later," he said. "The access to Firkin and Fox was poured today, but will need time to cure before people can start walking on it."
Rotter said the new south side Third Street access to The Firkin and Fox will be ready for foot traffic later Thursday evening.
New Third Street access to Bella Fiore and Mom and Pop's Diner on the north side of the plaza was poured Tuesday, and should have been cured by late Wednesday for foot traffic, he said.
Until the new Third Street accesses are ready for foot traffic, entry from the Carson Street side of Third is the safest route.
Since Carson Street access to Third Street has been closed permanently, Rotter said Curry Street is the route to take to access the businesses along the Third Street plaza area.
"Curry is the primary way to get there and will be into the future," he said.
He said parking for these businesses can be found on Second and Curry streets, as well as the west-side Curry Street parking lot between Third and Fourth streets, where the Saturday Farmer's Market is held.
Although all of the work being done in the area can be distracting, Rotter urged consumers not to be deterred by the construction.
"Come visit these businesses, they are open," he said. "They continue to remain open their normal hours."
He also reminds people to stay safe while walking around the construction. Observe signage and avoid entering areas that are fenced off from pedestrian traffic, Rotter said.
