Carson City Muscle Powered trail coordinator Jeff Potter recognized with national award
Muscle Powered's Jeff Potter was honored recently for his work on the Ash Canyon to Kings Trail in Carson City at the National and International Trail Awards, held in Portland, Oregon.
American Trails presents the National and International Trails Awards Program to recognize the tremendous contributions of volunteers, professionals, and other leaders who are working for the betterment of trails both nationally and internationally and in both rural and urban settings. These awards are presented every two years at the International Trails Symposium. The ceremony was held May 19.
Potter, trails coordinator for Muscle Powered based in Carson City, was honored with the Trail Worker Award. This award recognizes an individual that has made outstanding contributions and provided consistent support for trail planning, development, or maintenance. It is intended to recognize the efforts of a private or public sector individual working for enhanced trail recreation on either the local, state, or national level.
Jeff’s vision of a trail that would traverse the Sierra Front above the state capitol came to fruition with the Ash to Kings Trail, a project which broke ground in 2012 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the summer of 2015.
Jeff personally led the project by coordinating efforts from multiple agencies, land owners, and user types. He determined the best alignment, oversaw design and construction, and developed partnerships necessary for the project’s completion. Jeff was instrumental in gathering more than 1,000 volunteers and not only instructing them in the construction of the trail, but also educating them in planning, design, sustainability, and stewardship.
“As the Recreation Trails Manager for Nevada State Parks, I meet a large number of fabulous people who qualify for these awards. I nominated Jeff because of his undying dedication, top notch trail skills, and humble nature which set him apart from others. Congrats to Jeff and his Muscle Powered trails team!” stated Jenny Scanland with Nevada State Parks.
Ann Bollinger, Carson City Open Space Administration commented, “In addition to Jeff’s vision, he has the ability to recruit and retain a dedicated trail team and many volunteers. With their assistance, the first trail has been completed. It will be a great asset to our community.”
The Northern Nevada / Lake Tahoe region was recognized with two other awards as well:
Partnership Award, Level One: American Conservation Experience and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
This award is given to a partnership which benefits agencies or services within the field of trail planning, design, or implementation. The Level One category is a partnership consisting of two entities.
Planning and Design Award, Level One: Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. This award recognizes a project that demonstrates outstanding planning, design, and implementation that enhances the trails movement in a specific location. The Level One category is for a project funded with less than $500,000.
