CHS Men’s swim team named Regional Champs

The Carson High School Men’s Swim Team earned the title of Regional Champions during the championship meet. Leading the charge were seniors Mateas Klatt and Carlos Torres, who both swam on the 400 Freestyle Relay along with Junior Nick Melsheimer and Sophomore Cole Bennett.

Individually, Nick Melsheimer placed 1st in the 100 Butterfly and 2nd in the 200 Freestyle. Matteas Klatt placed 2nd in the 100 Freestyle and 3rd in the 200 Freestyle.

Ben Kahue placed 2nd in the 100 Backstroke and 6th in the 200 Freestyle. Todd Gosselin placed 4th in the 200 Individual Medley and 6th in the 100 Breaststroke. Carlos Torres placed 6th in the 100 Butterfly and 8th in the 100 Breaststroke. Cole Bennett placed 7th in the 100 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle. Hunter Del Fiorentino placed 7th in the 50 Freestyle and 8th in the 100 Freestyle.

Austin Shim placed 8th in the 50 Freestyle and 14th in the 100 Butterfly. Asher Kiel placed 5th in the 100 Backstroke and 10th in the 500 Freestyle. Owen Orvald placed 10th in the 100 Backstroke. The team of Ben Kahue, Todd Gosselin, Cole Bennett and Asher Kiel swam to a 4th place finish in the 200 Medley relay. In the 200 Freestyle Relay, Matteas, Carlos, Austin and Nick placed 2nd.

Additionally, the Carson High School Women’s Swim Team were led by Junior Talia Thornburg, taking 5th in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. Other individual place takers included Alexandra Llama-Cruz placed 6th in both the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. Katarina Klatt placed 2nd in the 50 Freestyle sprint and 3rd in the 100 Freestyle sprint. Brynn Russell placed 4th in the 500 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke.

Ella Dooley placed 13th in the 200 Freestyle and 14th in the 100 Backstroke. Penelope Moniz-Gonzales placed 16th in the 100 Freestyle. Arianna Martinez, Ella Dooley, Penelope Moniz-Gonzalez and Alexandra Szanto placed 8th in the 200 Medley relay. Alexandra, Katarina and Brynn (all freshman) teamed up with Talia to complete the 200 Free and 400 Free Relays, placing in the top three to earn a team score of 211, taking 4th place overall.

Swim Coach Monica Weaver noted when a swimmer places in the top four, they also make the Northern Nevada All-Region Team. Additionally, the following swimmers maintained a 4.0 GPA or higher and made the Nevada All-State Academic Team:

UPDATE 6:52PM: Firefighters were able to get the upper hand on the Stephanie Fire burning in northeast Douglas County, with a reported 10 acres burned. It was originally reported as 18 acres but was downsized. The cause was a vehicle. Douglas County notes there wasn't a plane crash that had been rumored. East Fork Fire and multiple agencies responded.

In a way, Hannah McDonald is claiming her legacy when she takes over at the end of this month as director of Partnership Carson City.

“As a kid, I grew up in prevention work,” she said. “I naturally kind of fell into the effort.”
