Stage One Web.com Tour Qualifying Begins Tuesday at Dayton Valley Golf Club

A field of 73 players will begin play Tuesday in Stage One Web.com Tour Qualifying at Dayton Valley Golf Club. This year’s group of golfers embarking on the annual grind to attempt to get to the Tour come from a wide variety of golf backgrounds.

From one of Jordan Spieth’s college and current roommates to a college golf coach, highly-touted young players just out of college, tour veterans and to a 37-year-old club pro still pursuing the dream, they are all after the same goal.

The highly-credentialed field includes 26 players who have previously played in a Dayton Q-school including 19 who were in the 2016 field. Eighteen players in the field advanced from Pre-qualifying tournaments that began the qualifying process for the 2017 Web.com Tour season. Twelve players in the field have previously played on the Web.com Tour.

Players of Local Interest:

Kevin Lucas, Folsom, Calif. – Played golf for the Nevada Wolfpack 2010-2012 finishing with the third lowest career scoring average in the Pack record book. Lucas has had a successful start on the mini tours despite an injury that sidelined him in 2015. He played in the 2014 Barracuda Championship, 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and won the 2016 Nevada Open in Mesquite. He barely missed qualifying for last year’s Web.com Q-school finals at a Second Stage event at Oak Valley GC in southern California. He has played in one previous Dayton qualifier in 2012 when he tied for 59th at 5-over and did not qualify.

Matt Marshall, Carlton, Ore. – Was born in Reno and his dad Bob was the head golf professional at the Championship Course at Incline Village. He played collegiately at UC Davis. He will be making his seventh start in a Dayton qualifier. His has advanced to the Second Stage in four of previous six starts at Dayton with a low finish of a tie for 4th place in 2015 at 13-under.

Jordan Wright, Incline Village – Making his first attempt to qualify after a successful collegiate career at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo. Won the Nevada State 2A championship in 2011 as a junior at Incline High. Finished in a tie for 20th at 1-under at Yolo Fliers Club in Woodland, Calif.. in a 2017 Pre-Qualifying tournament in September to get in Dayton field. His mom, Shelly Wright is well-known in area golf circles as the director of The Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic that has helped thousands of youngsters become interested in golf for the past 25 years. Dad Ron was also the boys’ basketball coach at Incline High.

Other Notable Players in the Field:

Nick Delio, Valencia, Calif. – The former Cal State Northridge golfer and 2008 California State Amateur champion is making his seventh consecutive start in a Dayton qualifier. He has advanced to second stage in all his previous starts finishing third in 2015 at 15-under and tied for fourth in 2014 at 17-under. His Dayton scoring average is 69.67 over the par 72 course.

David Gazzolo, Riverside, Calif. – 24-year-old had five starts on the Web.com Tour this year making the cut once and finishing in a tie for seventh at the Wichita tour stop. Played in Web.com q-school finals in 2015.

Ben Geyer, Arbuckle, Calif. – Making his third consecutive start in the Dayton qualifier after a tie for ninth last year at 11-under and second place in 2015 at -17 under. Played in 13 events on the Web.com Tour in 2015 only making two cuts. Played in the 2015 Barracuda Championship and 2016 Frys.com Open on the PGA Tour. Played college golf for the St. Mary’s Gaels.

Alex Moon, Dallas Tex. – College teammate of Jordan Spieth and Cody Gribble at the University of Texas. Roomed with Spieth and Texas and along with Kramer Hickok shares the 16,655 square-foot that Spieth bought in Dallas. Has played two seasons on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. He played in the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson shooting 77-69 to miss the cut. Made it to the Web.com Q-school finals last year.

Trevor Simsby, Carlsbad, Calif. – Former Washington Huskie golfer finished third in last year’s Dayton qualifier at 16-under. Played in 13 events on the 2015 Web.com Tour after tying for 28th in the 2014 Web.com Q-school Finals coming all the way through from Pre-qualifying.

This is the fifth-time Q-school for the Web.com Tour will be conducted at Dayton Valley and continues a record run of 23 consecutive years of PGA and Web.com Tour qualifying at Dayton Valley Golf Club.

The 72-hole tournament gets underway daily at 9:00 a.m. with players teeing off in threesomes from both the 1st and 10th tees, barring the possibility of frost delay.

Dayton Valley is one of 12 sites across the country hosting First Stage qualifying tournaments during the last week of September and first two weeks of October. Second Stage qualifying will be played at five sites in November.

The Final Stage will be played Dec. 7 –10 at Whirlwind Golf Club, Devils Claw and The Cattail courses, in Chandler, Ariz.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.
