Radio program looks to Nevada history as guide to the region's future
VIRGINIA CITY — Longtime Virginia City businessman Hugh Roy Marshall brings old cars, old wars and old warhorses to the Northern Nevada airwaves this Saturday, May 22.
Tales of Nevada Past and Present airs at 1 p.m. on 5,000-watt 1270-AM. The program is also available live to online listeners at www.KBZZ.com. The on-air call-in talk line is (775) 823-1920.
This week's featured players:
The old war horse: Veteran tourism media specialist Harry Spencer, a popular local columnist who specializes in stories of his first-hand knowledge of the golden age of Nevada gambling.
The old war: Izabella Hunt-Jones Eaves of Comstock Civil War Re-Enacters who will preview upcoming events commemorating the war that never died.
Old war wagons: Hugh Roy Marshall's Silverland Hotel in Virginia City hosts the Battle Born Showdown (or should that be show 'n' shine?) on Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30. More than 300 classic and restored automobiles will grace the Silverland environs.
"I'm now in my fourth decade as a Nevadan and we are facing our toughest times in 80 years. The solutions can only come from the same place they always have -- the people of Nevada. We have the brainpower, the software. It's up to our leaders to install the hardware to make it all work," Marshall says.
"My program showcases Nevadans with the knowledge to bring us back stronger, bigger and better. Our rich history should be our guide to a prosperous future," Marshall said.
Hugh Roy Marshall built and opened the Silverland Inn & Suites in Virginia City in 2006. He also owns and operates The Marshall Mint and Museum on the VC boardwalk. Since 1996, the jewelry and mint press operation has marketed handcrafted gold and silver medallions and a wide range of other collectibles created from Nevada precious metals.
Marshall also has a hand in developing Silver State precious metals through his mining interests both on the Comstock and in other areas of Nevada.
Later on Saturday afternoon, the Marshall Mint will be featured on Main Street Northern Nevada on KTVN TV-2. It will air at 4:30 p.m.
